Resources for Long-Term or Unexpected Campus/Building Closure 

Some situations may arise which require the university to unexpectedly close for a longer than typical period of time and it will be important to continue the work of teaching and learning. These pages are focused on providing information, tools, and other resources to ensure that faculty, staff, and students have what they need to continue moving forward, even when physically coming to campus is not possible.

Getting Started

Here are some things to consider prior to and during a qualifying campus or building closure:

  1. Be Prepared
    Start the conversations now and plan early! Begin thinking about how your work and learning might be affected during a qualifying closure and explore options for addressing any concerns or issues. 
  2. Stay Connected
    Make sure you are aware of UCO's official communication locations and set up your Central alerts so that you know the latest information. Follow UCO on social media and stay up to date with your colleagues or instructors' communication methods. 
  3. Initiate Communication Early
    As soon as you become aware of a qualifying closure, initiate communication with the appropriate individuals. Connect with your supervisor or instructor to get additional information and instructions for handling the closure process. Keep in mind, things take time! Your supervisor or instructor may still be working through channels of their own and could be delayed in sending out information. 
  4. Set Realistic Goals/Expectations
    Instructors and supervisors should carefully consider how the closure will affect their classes, offices and/or services and make appropriate accommodations or shifts in expectations. Consider what can reasonably be accomplished within the new working parameters and what things could be delayed until the campus re-opens. 
  5. Clearly Communicate Your New Expectations
    Communication is vital when a physical presence is not possible. Once decisions have been made in terms of expectations, it is important to convey those expectations clearly and consistently. Find new pathways for communication and consider what tools could substitute for what you had been doing previously. 
  6. Select Tools that are Familiar to Accomplish Your Tasks
    Try to rely on tools and processes that are familiar to you, your employees and/or your students and only bring in new tools when absolutely necessary. Major shifts and change can be overwhelming on their own; bringing in a lot of new tools or approaches may result in additional delays and frustration. Now is a great time to start experimenting with online collaboration sessions and shared documents so that there is familiarity in the event that those tools become necessary.
