Students having fun at the UCO Leadership Academy

UCO Leadership Academy (UCOLA)

A great way for high school freshmen to be exposed to the University of Central Oklahoma and begin thinking about higher education. The executive board is dedicated to having a high-quality leadership development curriculum that focuses on a new theme each year. Through workshops, activities and discussions, students learn how to make a difference among their peers. Students also participate in a campus tour and a resource fair highlighting services and programs offered here at UCO.

TEDxUCO

TEDxUCO

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxUCO, where x = an independently organized TED event. At our TEDxUCO event, TED Talks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

Study Tours

UCO encourages each student to develop a global perspective. The relationship between leadership capacity and a thorough international perspective is well documented. During each academic year, Leadership Central plans several three-hour study tours for students pursuing the leadership minor or for upper-division credit. These study tours balance an understanding of the local culture and history while also combining service-learning through local service projects and initiatives.

Lessons in Leadership

Lessons in LeadershipLessons in Leadership is UCO’s unique speaker series which features outstanding metro, staten national and global leaders from a variety of backgrounds once a week. Students who choose to take the course for credit may earn either 1 or 3 credit hours.  This fall semester course focuses on developing student's individual leadership capacity and presenting numerous viewpoints and personal anecdotal lessons from varying leaders.

Nigh Academy

Nigh Academy

On April 19, 1999, the Oklahoma State Legislature and former Gov. Frank Keating established the George and Donna Nigh Public Service Scholarship. The purpose of this scholarship is to allow each of the two- and four-year higher educational institutions, both public and private, to select and honor one student each year to be named a Nigh Scholar. Each student is selected and nominated by their institutional president and receive a one time $1,000 Leadership Scholarship.
