How are films made? How do films make meaning?

Many of us have an appreciation for movies and hold some meaningful ones dear, but it can be a struggle to put into words just how a film has impacted us. Film studies is the rigorous analysis of filmmaking tools and the place of films in visual culture.

Students in the Film Studies minor at UCO gain a critical vocabulary for film analysis in order to evaluate and analyze the meaning of movies as part of popular culture. As an interdisciplinary minor, Film Studies represents a collaboration between the departments of English, Modern Languages, Humanities and Mass Communication. Our students acquire media literacy about the filmmaking techniques that produce cinema’s wider impact. The minor integrates well with degrees across campus to demonstrate competency with how your area of study intersects with visual media and the film industry.
