Master of Education in Reading
The Master of Education in Reading program at the University of Central Oklahoma uses multiple educational settings to prepare students for a wide range of positions in the field.
Candidates completing the degree requirements will be eligible to apply for certification as a PreK-12 Reading Specialist, as outlined by the Oklahoma State Department of Education.
Student Learning Objectives
The Master of Education in Reading curriculum is designed to meet the International Literacy Association's Standards for the Preparation of Reading Professionals 2017.
UCO Reading Clinic
Does your child struggle with reading? The UCO Reading Clinic offers evaluations of children’s reading and individualized tutoring for struggling readers in first through twelfth grade at a reasonable fee. All tutors are students completing their degrees at UCO and are closely supervised by program faculty. Visit the Reading Clinic website for more information.
Reading Specialist
Upon completion of the Master of Education in Reading program, graduates have the opportunity to apply for certification as a Reading Specialist. Applicants must complete the program, all key assessments included in the program, and pass the Oklahoma Subject Area Test (OSAT) in Reading.

This degree will help you become a Literacy Leader in your school and district, and will help you be a stronger, more prepared classroom teacher, with a repertoire of strategies, assessments and foundational knowledge to help you teach students, of all ages and abilities, to read in PreK-12th grade classrooms.
