Myron Pope, Ed.D., Vice President for Student Affairs
Myron L. Pope is the Vice President for Student Affairs, a capacity he has served in since 2012. He is a native of Sweet Water, Alabama, and he attended the University of Alabama, where he received a bachelor’s degree in history/English and a master’s and doctorate in higher education administration. During his career, he has worked in the community college system of Alabama as a Talent Search Counselor, at the University of Alabama as the Director of Recruitment for the College of Education, at the University of Oklahoma as a faculty member in the Adult and Higher Education program and at the University of Central Oklahoma as Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and the Vice President of Enrollment Management.
He also continues to teach in the African and African-American Studies and the Adult and Higher Education programs at the University of Oklahoma. In his current role as Vice President for Student Affairs, his primary goals include student support and advocacy, the promotion of students’ involvement and the creation of learning experiences outside the classroom.
Pope has conducted a variety of research on higher education related issues, including student success, community college student and administrative issues, minority student concerns, faculty governance issues and institutional trust. He has published in scholarly journals and books and has also presented regionally, nationally and internationally on these topics. He has been active on the regional and national levels of ACPA, ASHE, CSCC and NASPA, as well as working as a consultant/evaluator with the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).
He has served on the Edmond Chamber of Commerce and was the board chair in 2011. He is on the board of the Urban League, the Edmond YMCA, the Oklahoma Blood Institute and the board of the Institute for Evidence Based Change. He has been appointed by Governor Mary Fallin to serve on the Oklahoma Department of Human Services’ Commission and the Administrative Citizens’ Advisory Panel.
Most recently, Pope has become involved with the Oklahoma Teachers’ Retirement System Board of Trustees. He has been very active in the community in the past as a coordinator of Leadership Edmond, a volunteer coach with the YMCA and a volunteer with the Watch D.O.G.S. program at his children's school. Pope has also volunteered as a board member for the Edmond Chamber of Commerce, the YMCA and the HOPE Center of Edmond. He is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. He was also a letterman in football at the University of Alabama where he was part of the 1992 National Championship Team.
He resides in Edmond with his wife, Shanna, and their three children, Michael, Allison and Isaiah.
