Winds and Percussion
The Winds and Percussion division encompasses woodwinds, brass and percussion, and is one of the largest divisions of the UCO School of Music. They offer a variety of ensembles designed to meet the artistic and educational needs of Central students. Students from all academic disciplines are invited to participate in the band program as ensembles are open to all who are interested and qualified. Throughout the year, they also offer various events inviting potential students to campus, including Instructional Clinics, Master classes and opportunities for those who wish to pursue music to visit ensembles and classes.
The UCO Band program's primary goal is the preparation and training of musicians for careers in music education, performance and studio teaching.
They are committed to providing a positive, inspiring, and motivating environment for all students who wish to participate in band at the college level. The large ensembles would not be complete without the participation of students majoring in other academic areas. They want all band members to enjoy a creative experience that will help them develop into proficient and flexible musicians and prepared them to make a contribution to their artistic community. In addition, they are focused on maintaining a leadership role among state and regional colleges and universities in the areas of professional development and contribution to repertoire and literature. Participation in UCO Bands will provide opportunities for musicians to create inspiring musical moments together, expanding their technical and aesthetic horizons.
Students may participate in one or more of three UCO major wind ensembles, including Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band and the “Stampede of Sound” Marching Band. UCO wind ensembles perform frequently at conferences regionally and nationally, on the stage of Carnegie Hall, and have toured recently to Germany. The UCO Wind Symphony has also recorded several albums on the Equilibrium label. In addition, the Stampede of Sound performs regularly at UCO football games. UCO wind ensembles are open to students by auditions at the beginning of each semester that can be arranged by contacting Dr. Brian Lamb, Director of Bands, at email@example.com.
Students also may participate in a variety of smaller ensembles and chamber music, including Basketball Band, UCO Flute Choir, UCO Trombone Choir, UCO Percussion Consort, Central Clarinet Choir, and the Leadership Chamber Music Initiative. These ensembles play in concerts and at a variety of other functions.
Scholarships and tuition waivers are available by audition for all UCO students for participation in these ensembles.
