Preparation for Reading Specialist Certification
UCO offers graduate courses to complete certification as a Reading Specialist. Students must already hold a Master’s Degree, or complete the Master of Education in Reading degree prior to completing this certification. Completion of the required courses, all required key assessments, and passing the Oklahoma Subject Area Test (OSAT) in Reading, will enable the student to apply for certification.
Reading program graduate courses use multiple educational settings to prepare students for a wide range of positions in the field. The Preparation for Reading Specialist Certification curriculum is designed to meet the International Literacy Association's Standards for the Preparation of Reading Professionals 2017.
Students who do not currently hold a Master’s degree upon entering the reading specialist certification program must complete all required courses to obtain a Master’s degree in Reading. Visit the Reading program page for required courses and more information.
This degree will help you become a Literacy Leader in your school and district. It will help you be a stronger, more prepared classroom teacher, with a repertoire of strategies, assessments and foundational knowledge to help you teach students, of all ages and abilities, to read in PreK-12th grade classrooms.
