External Grants

In an era of ever stricter and more limited budgetary times in higher education, external grants play an increasingly important role in bringing in new sources of funds to supplement UCO's educational mission, to attract, retain and develop faculty, improve faculty relations, purchase equipment and fund valuable research, creative and scholarly activities.

The Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) oversees all aspects of the pre-award grant process to federal, state, and local agencies, with the exception of agencies that require a 501(c)(3) nonprofit status to apply.

ORSP Services

As part of promoting transformational learning, the ORSP assists faculty and staff through the process of identifying, developing, and submitting a grant proposal. Our services include:

  • Assistance with proposal preparation processes and procedures;
  • Assistance with proposal development;
  • Guidance for budget preparation;
  • Guidance for ensuring compliance with agency guidelines;
  • Obtaining institutional approval; and,
  • Submission of electronic proposals to federal agencies through Grants.gov.

Faculty On-Campus Grant Program

The purpose of the Faculty On-Campus  Grant Program is to encourage a continuum of research, creative, and scholarly activities by faculty at UCO. The intent of this program is to provide funding for faculty members to develop research projects with internal funds and then complete or expand the project with funds obtained from an external granting agency (federal, state, private corporation, etc.).

All proposals will be peer-reviewed by external evaluators (non-UCO faculty and employees) with knowledge in the discipline of each proposal.

The Research Advisory Council (RAC) assists in the funding recommendation process.

Depending on the type of grant, funds can be used to support replacement time during the fall or spring semester from one course (up to 4 hours per academic year) for the Principal Investigator (PI). The replacement time is intended to allow the PI the freedom and time to conduct and manage the research project. An individual may be the PI on only one proposal per year and can only apply for up to one FTE Research Assistant; there are no restrictions on the number of proposals for which a person may serve as a Co-PI.

There are budgetary restrictions to items that can be purchased with funds from on-campus grant funds. Call ORSP at 405-974-3492 if you have questions regarding allowable expenditures.

Opportunities Booklet

Find Your Opportunity

As part of its mission, the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs acts as an outspoken advocate for all UCO research, creative, and scholarly activities by creating a welcoming environment, supporting faculty initiatives and by facilitating the integration of research, creative, and scholarly activities into teaching tools. The Office of Research & Sponsored Programs serves as a liaison among faculty, staff, students, other universities, business, industry and funding agencies by assisting with external grant and collaborative opportunities.

A copy of the ORSP Opportunities Booklet is available in Room 341, Nigh University Center. You also may email the ORSP and one will be delivered to you.
