Sharla Weathers, Director -- Disability Support Services
"I wanted to share briefly about my experience with our employee wellness program here at UCO. I had been over to the Wellness Center just a few times in my ten years at UCO and used their facilities to workout, mostly when it was too cold outside.
Last semester I had the opportunity to sign up for the Student Affairs Get’EM program. The specific session I joined was a group fitness class -- Circuit/TRX. As this class was conducted outside, it not only challenged my physicality, but also my mentality, given the extreme heat at the onset and the cooler temperatures by the end of the semester. Even though this specific fitness class is physically challenging, the leaders -- Shea and Bobby -- really worked with us, given our various levels of activity and any limitations.
Over the course of the semester, my energy level increased, my body tone was enhanced, I lost weight and overall, my attitude on life became very positive. I looked forward to going and not only working out, but collaborating with others, both students and colleagues. I found not only the staff encouraging, but also those working out with me.
Last semester I set out to become healthier and not only took part in the Get’EM program, but also took advantage of many of the other fitness group classes such as yoga, Pilates, Zumba, Body Pump and cycle. I've become a regular at the Wellness Center. With every session I attended, I found the group instructors knowledgeable, sensitive, helpful, motivating and welcoming. I attended, for the most part, three to five group fitness classes a week.
I encourage others to check out these fitness programs, no matter your age or ability. I've learned to have no hesitancy in joining a younger population, despite my age or unique physicality when it comes to exercise. I actually thrive off their energy levels. Hope one day soon you’ll join me at the Wellness Center and reap from the benefits as well!"
