The purpose of Diversity Leadership Institute helps students to identify with their own culture (Cultural Identity), become informed about other people’s cultures and behavior (Knowledge), understand the feelings and needs of other people (Empathy), and become aware of one’s own desires, strengths, weaknesses and emotional stability (Self-Confidence). The activities, workshops, and discussions work to build cultural competent leaders who are challenged to assess their perceptions about themselves and others in regard to differences.
Students will describe the impact of their cultural experiences and their approach to leadership.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the complex social and cultural identities that other people may face and be able to identify issues of students’ individual differences, such as gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, social class, and ability/disability.
Students will identify the cultural differences in verbal and nonverbal communication.
Students will initiate and develop interactions with culturally, different individuals.
Critique the major theories of social justice; spiritual development; racial/ethnic identity development; gay, lesbian, and bisexual identity development; gender identity development; disability; class; and multicultural/multiracial identity development.
