Black History Month Kick-Off
Join us as we kick off Black History Month 2013 with an interactive discussion centered on the topic "Black Is…"Dr. Kevin Teal is a Board Certified Neurosurgeon and is a Physician at Integris Spine and Neurological Surgery. He completed his Residency and Internship at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas where he also earned his Medical Degree. He is a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and a Diplomat of the American Board of Neurosurgery. He attends People’s Church in Oklahoma City. Dr. Teal was the first African-American to complete a Neurosurgery Residency at Parkland Hospital/ University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Refreshments will be provided.

The Department of Art is pleased to present work by its two African American emerging scholars. Teresa Anderson will present six paintings, each depicting a prominent member of African American society. Mickayla Fisher will present a poster presentation titled “The Nation of Islam in Visual Culture.”

Willie Lynch 2013: Are We Still Living with a Slave Mentality
The Willie Lynch Letters is a speech given by a slave owner, in which he tells other slave masters that he has discovered the "secret" to controlling black slaves by doing things such as setting them against one another. Our discussion will center on if this time in history still have an impact on us today.

HIV Testing
African Americans face the most severe burden of HIV of all racial/ethnic groups in the United States (US). Despite representing only 14% of the US population in 2009, African Americans accounted for 44% of all new HIV infections in that year. Compared with members of other races and ethnicities, African Americans account for a higher proportion of HIV infections at all stages of disease—from new infections to deaths. The Black Student Association is encouraging the UCO community to get tested TODAY!
