Americorps at UCO
Students in Service:
20 service-learning scholarships endowed through AmeriCorps & facilitated through Washington State Campus Compact & Oklahoma Campus Compact. These scholarships require students to perform 300 hours of direct service to the community in a 365 day time period in exchange for a $1,132 Education Award at the end of their term of service. Practicums for academic credit count for this scholarship, as long as the practicum is completed at a non-profit entity. All the slots for the 2010-2011 grant cycle have been taken. We should have information in 2012 about the next grant cycle.
Matching Educational Awards:
All Students in Service are incited to apply for a Matching Educational Award, funded by the VP for Student Affairs. This requires that the students do an additional 100 hours on top of the 300 hours they perform for Students in Service in one of six focus areas:
1) Clean Energy/Environment
2) Healthy Futures
6) Disaster Services
The $1,000 cash award will be given when the student completes their 300 Students in Service hours, as well as their 100 additional hours of service.
VISTA stands for Volunteers in Service to America. For 2010-2011, Central was approved for two VISTA positions: one for mentoring/tutoring and one for Financial Literacy. This program involves a person living at poverty wages for a year and working in their given interest areas. AmeriCorps does allow for a VISTA to go to school part-time while they are a VISTA.
