Physical violence experienced in adulthood often happens in the context of close, intimate relationships. Although recent research has highlighted that both men and women can perpetrate violence in their close relationships, women overwhelmingly sustain the bulk of physical injuries from these violent encounters. Additionally, crime statistics indicate that most of firearm violence seen in the workplace involves domestic abuse that has spilled over into the workplace. Although rare, this sort of violence is more likely after a breakup or marital separation, and often involves a male shooting his estranged partner and bystanders at the workplace. If you have recently broken up with a partner who might come to your workplace unannounced, tell your supervisor and provide a photo of the person. Your supervisor should initiate a security protocol that contains a plan of what you and others in your workplace should do if your ex-partner shows up at your place of employment. If you are in a relationship in which one or both of you become violent, it is imperative that you actively take steps to break the cycle of violence.
