Sociology, Gerontology, and Substance Abuse Studies Scholarships

Scholarship Applications for 2014-2015 are Now Closed 

The College of Liberal Arts wants to thank all of our students for applying for the 2014-2015 scholarships and awards. Applications are now being reviewed by committees and all students who applied will be notified via email no later than April 1st.

Scholarship and award recipients are asked to attend the College of Liberal Arts Donor/Student Luncheon from 11:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Friday, April 11th. The student awards will be handed out later that day from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m. More information will be provided when students are notified by email.

The Finney Scholars Scholarship

Underwritten by gifts to the Finney Fund and to the Liberal Arts Scholarship Fund

Scholarship Mission:  To provide scholarships that recognize Liberal Art students who are identified as having a proven record of high academic achievement in their chosen major.

Value and Duration:  The value of the Finney Scholarships is determined by the funds available and is disbursed in the following academic year.

Criteria:  The selected recipients will meet the following criteria and may be required to submit additional documentation as required by the department.
* Must be a Liberal Arts major
* Must have a 3.5 GPA in the major and a 3.5 GPA overall
* Must be currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in good standing
* Must show practical evidence of excellence in the discipline as determined by the department (see additional requirements below)

Requirements:   The recipient will be asked to write a letter of thanks to the Scholarship Donors. This letter must be delivered to the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s office, ATTN: Lauren B. Belflower before May 1, 2014.

The Judy Leitner Scholarship in Gerontology

Scholarship Mission:  To provide a scholarship for a graduate student enrolled in the Master of Arts in Gerontology program.

Value and Duration:  The value of the scholarship will be determined by the funds available and will be disbursed in the Fall semester.

Criteria:
* Must be admitted to the graduate program-Master of Arts in Gerontology
* Must be enrolled in a minimum of 3 credit hours
* Must be in good standing with the University with a minimum 3.0 GPA
* Must be an Oklahoma resident
* Must submit a 750 word (approx.) statement describing the rationale for scholarship merit and intent to work in the field of Gerontology; both need and merit will be used in the selection process

Requirements:   The recipient will be asked to write a letter of thanks to Ms. Patricia Bolt. This letter must be delivered to the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s office, ATTN: Lauren B. Belflower before May 1, 2014.

Edmond Senior Community Foundation Scholarship in Gerontology

Scholarship Mission:  To provide a scholarship to students who are accepted in the Graduate Program in Gerontology.

Value and Duration:  The value of the scholarship is determined by the funds available and will be disbursed in the Fall semester to two students.

Criteria:
* Must be accepted in the Graduate Program in Gerontology
* Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 hours
* Must be in good academic standing
* Must express intent to work in the field of gerontology
* Financial need will be considered

Requirements:  The recipient will be asked to write a letter of thanks to The Edmond Senior Community Foundation and the UCO Foundation. This letter must be delivered to the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s office, ATTN: Lauren B. Belflower before May 1, 2014.

Odom Outreach Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  This scholarship is to be awarded to a Sociology undergraduate major who has shown resilience in his/her life and has demonstrated community involvement through volunteer efforts.

Value and Duration:  The value of the scholarship is $500 and will be disbursed in the fall semester.

Criteria:
* Must be a declared major of Sociology-General, Human Services or Substance Abuse Studies
* Must be a full-time student returning in the Fall semester
* Must have a minimum GPA overall of 2.5
* Must provide a 1 to 2 pp. essay describing the financial need, community service and career plans that would give back to the community
* Must have a current FAFSA on file with the UCO Office of Financial Aid

Requirements:  The recipient will be asked to write a letter of thanks to Ben Odom, who made this scholarship possible. This letter must be delivered to the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s office, ATTN: Lauren B. Belflower before May 1, 2014.
