College of Liberal Arts Scholarships

The College of Liberal Arts offers a number of scholarship opportunities to students. While some scholarships are awarded to students by individual departments, there are several that are available to any student in the College of Liberal Arts. Beginning in Spring 2015, students may apply for scholarships at scholarships.uco.edu.

Nathanial Martinez Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  To provide a scholarship to a Liberal Arts major who is registered with Disability Services.

The Finney Scholars Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  To provide scholarships that recognize Liberal Art students who are identified as having a proven record of high academic achievement in their chosen major.

The Womack Investment Advisors Undergraduate Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  To provide a scholarship to an undergraduate student who represents leadership and community involvement.

The Panera Bread Liberal Arts Student Organization President Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  The scholarship provides recognition to the outstanding leadership and efforts of a Liberal Arts Student Organization president.

Liberal Arts Student Organization Officer Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  The scholarship provides recognition to the outstanding efforts of a Liberal Arts student organization officer.

Liberal Arts Honor Society Student Officer Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  The scholarship provides recognition to the outstanding efforts of a Liberal Arts honor society officer.

Liberal Arts Civic Engagement Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  To provide a scholarship to recognize a Liberal Arts student’s leadership and community involvement.

Debate Scholarships

The Tyler Henry Memorial Scholarship for Debate

Scholarship Mission:  This scholarship is provided to assist a student who has completed 12 hours at UCO and has been accepted to the Debate Team.

H.B. Mitchell Endowed Scholarship for Debate

Scholarship Mission:  This scholarship is named in honor of former debate coach Harland B. Mitchell and is awarded to the student who exemplifies the best qualities of Oklahoma high school debate.   This scholarship is for Oklahoma residents only and is only available to students beginning their first year at UCO the Fall 2015 semester.

The Lee Sherman Debate Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  To provide a scholarship to a student who is an Oklahoma resident and who has committed to going to UCO and to being active in the Debate Program.

Criminal Justice Scholarships

The Sid Brown Excellence in Criminal Justice Award

Scholarship Mission:  To provide a scholarship to a a Criminal Justice major whose research paper is selected by the committee.

 

English Scholarships

Dr. Claude Arnold Scholarship

Scholarship Mission: This scholarship, provided by the Everett Family Foundation through the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, recognizes a student who has excelled in the classroom and who shows outstanding research ability and potential in the field of English Studies.

Lorraine K. Bell Scholarship

Scholarship Mission: This scholarship, established in honor of former UCO English and humanities instructor Lorraine King Bell, recognizes a student who has demonstrated outstanding scholarly ability and has played an active role in department and university activities.

Dr. Dean Everett Outstanding English Student Award

Scholarship Mission: This scholarship, provided by the Everett Family Foundation through the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, recognizes a well-rounded student who has excelled academically and has contributed to the campus community.

The Dr. Frank Finney Reach for Excellence Award

Scholarship Mission: This scholarship, provided by the Everett Family Foundation through the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, rewards a student who has a sound GPA, demonstrated financial need, and a determination to succeed.

Barbara Kay Gilmore Endowed Scholarships for English

Scholarship Mission: This scholarship, established in honor of UCO alumna Barbara Kay Gilmore, recognizes outstanding full- and part-time undergraduate and graduate students in English.

Carol Hamilton Creative Writing Scholarship

Scholarship Mission: This scholarship, established in honor of UCO alumna and former faculty member Carol Hamilton, supports a UCO senior who has been accepted into the graduate program in Creative Writing.

Clara Kessler Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship Mission: This scholarship, which honors UCO alumna and Eastern Washington University faculty member Clara Kessler, recognizes an English Education major who expresses intent to teach English.

Dale Edward McConathy Scholarship

Scholarship Mission: This scholarship, established in honor of UCO alumnus Dale Edward McConathy, recognizes an undergraduate or graduate student in English who displays promise as a writer.

Francis Coram Oakes Scholarship in English

Scholarship Mission: This scholarship, which is supported by various donors, honors Francis Coram Oakes, the first member of the English faculty at UCO, and recognizes students who have excelled in the classroom, demonstrate exceptional promise in the field of English Studies, and have demonstrated financial need.

Dr. Loree M. Rice Scholarship

Scholarship Mission: This scholarship, established in honor of former faculty member Dr. Loree M. Rice, recognizes a junior English Education student

Adam Luke Worden Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship Mission: This scholarship honors Adam Luke Worden, who received the Bachelor of Arts degree in English with minors in Religious Studies and Philosophy from UCO. This memorial scholarship provides financial assistance to an undergraduate English or Creative Writing major who is gifted in the discipline.

Danielle Lelene Barnes Endowed Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  This scholarship, established in memory and honor of UCO student Danielle Lelene Barnes, recognizes an English major and Women’s Studies minor student.

Martin, Wilson, and Associates Endowed Scholarship in Creative Writing

Scholarship Mission:  This scholarship recognizes a Creative Writing student.

History and Geography Scholarships

The Building Traditions, Educating Generations-Museum Studies Awards

Scholarship Mission: To present two awards to students majoring in History-Museum Studies.

Emeritus Scholarship

Scholarship Mission: The scholarship is awarded in honor of a retired or retiring professor of History and Geography.

Everett Museum Studies Scholarship

Scholarship Mission: Reflecting Dr. Mark R. Everett’s appreciation for the visual arts, this scholarship recognizes a student who achieves in the classroom and who demonstrates capacity for excellence in the field of Museum Studies.

Dr. Stan Hoig Endowed Memorial Scholarship in History

Scholarship Mission: To provide a scholarship for a UCO student who is a declared History Department major who submits a paper focusing on the American West.

John Osburn Scholarship

Scholarship Mission: To provide a scholarship to History or Geography students who show outstanding achievement in academics and activities as it relates to their major.

Pugh Family Pioneer in Geography Scholarship

Scholarship Mission: This scholarship provides funds for a student whose major is Geography who holds a standing of sophomore or junior at UCO. The scholarship is open to US as well as International students.

Kenneth Rees Scholarship in History Education

Scholarship Mission: To provide a scholarship for one History Education student.

The David Webb Scholarship

Scholarship Mission: To provide a scholarship that is available to an undergraduate or graduate student who has financial need and shows academic promise.

The Russ Goodno History Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  The scholarship is awarded to a History General or History Education major in honor of retired Professor of History Russ Goodno.

Humanities and Philosophy Scholarships

Outstanding Tutor, Outstanding Academic Achievement in Humanities, Outstanding Academic Achievement in Philosophy

Scholarship Mission:  To recognize outstanding students in Humanities and Philosophy.

Outstanding Academic Achievement in Applied Liberal Arts Award

Scholarship Mission:  To recognize a student’s outstanding academic achievement in Applied Liberal Arts.

Vivian Lanier Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  To provide a scholarship for a student showing great promise in Humanities in order to aid in their quest for knowledge.

Alumni and Faculty Scholarship for Philosophy

Scholarship Mission:  To provide a scholarship for Philosophy students who demonstrate high academic promise.

Mass Communication Scholarships

Stanley W. Case Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Mass Communication  

Scholarship Mission:  This scholarship is designed to honor veteran news anchor, broadcast journalist and UCO Distinguished Alumni Stan Case.  It is awarded to a

Jack Deskin Professional Media Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  This scholarship awards a junior or senior studying Professional Media who displays excellence in the study of broadcasting.

Dr. Woody Gaddis Photography Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  To provide a scholarship to a photography major.

The Joe Hight Award

Scholarship Mission:  To recognize the best paper written by a Junior or Senior for the course MCOM 4423 Media Ethics or MCOM 4433 Victims and the Media.

Dr. Stan Hoig Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Mass Communication

Scholarship Mission:  To provide a scholarship for a Mass Communication major who submits a media sample suitable for publication or broadcast; preference will be given to a student who provides a sample that features the American West.

Barbara Norman Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  To provide scholarship dollars to a graduating senior who is a Mass Communication major in order to purchase clothing for interviews.

Wendell and Pauline Simmons Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  This scholarship recognizes a Mass Communication student who shows passion and commitment to their chosen major as evidenced by strong academic performance.

Daniel Smith Photography Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  Two scholarships are provided: one scholarship is provided by book proceeds from Building Traditions, Educating Generations and a second scholarship is provided by various private donors.

Reba Collins Endowed Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  This scholarship is awarded to a student who shows outstanding achievement and promise in print journalism.

Modern Languages Scholarships

Pandora Everett Scholarship in Spanish Language Education

Scholarship Mission:  The scholarship is provided to address the demand for Spanish Language Teachers and is awarded to a student with a declared major in Spanish Education.

Outstanding French Student, Outstanding German Student, Outstanding Spanish Student

Scholarship Mission:  These scholarships are awarded to students who show excellence in their language studies.

Cathy Stults Scholarship in French Studies

Scholarship Mission: This scholarship provides funds to support a student who is a French major or minor.

Samuel Henry and Elizabeth P. Mitchell Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  The scholarship is awarded to recognize students of the Modern Languages Department who are accomplished in several languages.

Dr. Rudi Nollert Scholarship in German Studies

Scholarship Mission:  The scholarship provides funds to support a student who is a German major or minor.

Political Science Scholarships

Dr. Randall Jones Outstanding Political Science Student

Scholarship Mission:  To provide a scholarship for a Political Science major to recognize academic achievement, and contributions to the department, college and university.

Political Science Paper Award

Award Mission:  This award provides money to recognize the winner of Political Science paper submissions.  There will be a Graduate and Undergraduate paper winner.  Winners will be the department’s representatives for the Oklahoma Political Science Association Paper Award competitions in the fall.

The Professor Leroy Crozier Internship Scholarship in Political Science

Scholarship Mission:  To provide a scholarship to Political Science students who are participating in a university approved internship.

Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society Award

Award Mission:  To provide an award to an outstanding member of Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society.  This award is available to an undergraduate or graduate student.

Political Science Leadership Award

Award Mission:  To recognize outstanding leadership characteristics in a Political Science major.

Outstanding Junior Political Science Student

Scholarship Mission:  To recognize academic achievement in a Political Science major who has achieved junior standing.

Outstanding Political Science Student Awards

Outstanding 1st Year Graduate Student Scholarship (General, Master of Public Administration or International Relations)

Outstanding 2nd Year Graduate Student Award in General Political Science

Outstanding 2nd Year Graduate Student Award in Master of  Public Administration

Scholarship/Award Mission:  Each of the scholarships/awards mentioned are awarded to Political Science majors who exemplify high academic achievement in their specific area of study and class standing.

Undergraduate Transfer Student Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  The purpose of this scholarship is to provide help to a student who has transferred in to UCO from another institution and is a declared Political Science major.

Dr. James Caster Scholarship in Legal Studies

Scholarship Mission:  The scholarship is named in honor of Dr. James Caster and is intended to aid a Political Science major who plans to attend Law School.

Sociology, Gerontology, and Substance Abuse Studies Scholarships

The Judy Leitner Scholarship in Gerontology

Scholarship Mission:  To provide a scholarship for a graduate student enrolled in the Master of Arts in Gerontology program.

Edmond Senior Community Foundation Scholarship in Gerontology

Scholarship Mission:  To provide a scholarship to student who is accepted in the Graduate Program in Gerontology.

Odom Outreach Scholarship

Scholarship Mission:  This scholarship is to be awarded to a Sociology undergraduate major who has shown resilience in his/her life and has demonstrated community involvement through volunteer efforts.
