English Scholarships

Dr. Claude Arnold Scholarship

Scholarship Mission: This scholarship, provided by the Everett Family Foundation through the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, recognizes a student who has excelled in the classroom and who shows outstanding research ability and potential in the field of English Studies.

Value and Duration: The endowment allows for this $1,500 scholarship to be disbursed on an annual basis, payable over the course of a full academic year (Fall/Spring) in equal payments of $750 each semester.

Qualifications:
* Enrollment in the Bachelor of Arts program in English, the Bachelor of Arts program in English/Creative Writing, or the Bachelor of Arts in Education program in English Education
* Minimum GPA of 3.0 overall
* Minimum GPA of 3.5 GPA in the major

Requirements: The recipient must complete additional documents required by the Oklahoma City Community Foundation, as well as the College of Liberal Arts application. The recipient will be required to write a letter of thanks to the Everett Family Trust which has made this scholarship available. This letter must be submitted to the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s Office, ATTN: Terri Winblad before May 1, 2013.

  • Scholarly Writing Sample (12-15 pp.), preferably focusing on Old English, Medieval, or Renaissance Literature

Scholarship Mission: This award, established in honor of former faculty member Dr. Martin R. Ausmus, recognizes a graduate student who has excelled in the classroom and demonstrates exceptional promise in the field of English Studies.

Value and Duration: The recipient of this award will receive a commemorative plaque and will be the Department of English’s nominee for the College of Liberal Arts’ Mary Elizabeth Morelli Outstanding Graduate Student Award.

Qualifications:
*Enrollment in the Master of Arts program in English (any major) or in the Master of Fine Arts program in Creative Writing

Bob Burke Endowed Scholarship in Creative Writing

Scholarship Mission: The Bob Burke Endowed Scholarship in Creative Writing, which was established through the generous gift of Oklahoma attorney and historian Bob Burke, recognizes outstanding applicants to and currently enrolled students in the Master of Fine Arts program in Creative Writing.

Value and Duration: This scholarship provides a disbursement in an amount that is determined by the funds available and is payable during the fall semester.

Qualifications:
*Application to or enrollment in the Master of Fine Arts program in Creative Writing
*Minimum GPA of 2.75 overall

Requirements: The recipient will be required to write a letter of thanks to Bob Burke, who has made this scholarship available. This letter must be submitted to the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s Office, ATTN: Terri Winblad before May 1, 2013.

  • Three letters of recommendation addressing the applicant’s academic and creative potential and his or her ability to undertake graduate study in Creative Writing
  • Essay (2-3 pp.) describing the applicant’s qualifications to pursue the Master of Fine Arts degree, his or her career plans in the field of Creative Writing and his or her reading habits; identifying a selection of significant texts that he or she has read recently; and indicating how these readings have influenced his or her understanding of literary art and his or her goals as a writer.

Scholarship Mission: This scholarship, established in honor of former UCO English and humanities instructor Lorraine King Bell, recognizes a student who has demonstrated outstanding scholarly ability and has played an active role in department and university activities.

Value and Duration: This scholarship provides a disbursement in an amount that is determined by the funds available and is payable during the fall semester.

Qualifications:
*Enrollment in the Bachelor of Arts program in English, the Bachelor of Arts program in English/Creative Writing, the Bachelor of Arts in Education program in English Education, the Master of Arts program in English (any major), or the Master of Fine Arts program in Creative Writing
*Junior, senior, or graduate status
*Demonstrated scholarly excellence
*Active participation in department and university activities

Requirements: The recipient will be required to write a letter of thanks to the Crooked Oak High School Alumni Association, which established this scholarship. This letter must be submitted to the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s Office, ATTN: Terri Winblad before May 1, 2013.

Barbara Kay Gilmore Endowed Scholarships for English

Scholarship Mission: This scholarship, established in honor of UCO alumna Barbara Kay Gilmore, recognizes outstanding full- and part-time undergraduate and graduate students in English.

Value and Duration: The endowment allows for scholarships to be disbursed on an annual basis, payable over the course of a full academic year (Fall/Spring). Amounts vary from $500 to $1000.

Qualifications:
*Full- or part-time enrollment in the Bachelor of Arts program in English, the Bachelor of Arts program in English/Creative Writing, the Bachelor of Arts in Education program in English Education, the Master of Arts program in English (any major), or the Master of Fine Arts program in Creative Writing
*Minimum GPA of 3.0
*Must have completed at least 60 undergraduate credit hours or have attained graduate standing
*Financial need will be considered

Requirements: The recipient will be required to write a letter of thanks to George and Barbara Lynch, the executors of the Gilmore estate. This letter must be submitted into the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s Office, ATTN: Terri Winblad before May 1, 2013.

Scholarship Mission: This scholarship, established in honor of UCO alumna and former faculty member Carol Hamilton, supports a UCO senior who has been accepted into the Master of Fine Arts program in Creative Writing.

Value and Duration: This scholarship provides a disbursement in an amount that is determined by the funds available and is payable during the fall semester.

Qualifications: The recipient must show promise as a creative writer and meet the following criteria:
*Senior undergraduate at UCO (any major)
*Demonstrated promise as a creative writer
*Acceptance into the Master of Fine Arts program in Creative Writing

Requirements: The recipient will be required to write a letter of thanks to Drs. Stephen and Tamela Hamilton, who provide the funds for this endowed scholarship. This letter must be submitted to the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s Office, ATTN: Terri Winblad before May 1, 2013.

Scholarship Mission: This scholarship honors Adam Luke Worden, who received the Bachelor of Arts degree in English with minors in Religious Studies and Philosophy from UCO. This memorial scholarship provides financial assistance to an undergraduate English or Creative Writing major who is gifted in the discipline.

Value and Duration: The $1,000 scholarship will be disbursed on an annual basis, payable over the course of a full academic year (Fall/Spring) in equal payments of $500 each semester.

Qualifications:
* Full-time enrollment (12+ credit-hours) in the Bachelor of Arts program in English or the Bachelor of Arts program in English/Creative Writing
* Junior or Senior status
* Minimum overall GPA of 2.5
