Studying French at UCO

The French section of the Department of Modern Languages offers general introductions to the French language and Francophone cultures, as well as advanced study for the training of teachers, scholars, and other professionals. The Program also serves as a catalyst for the creation of community events and activities to promote cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary understanding, communication, and analysis.

Course Offerings

Elementary and Intermediate levels are offered each fall and spring semester with both day and evening sections. Elementary level classes are additionally offered in the summer.

Depending on enrollment, Intermediate level classes and French electives are also offered in the summer.

In addition to the yearly upper-division course rotation, other 2000-4000 level French electives are offered as departmental resources allow.

French study tours may be taken for French credit. The number of credit hours varies depending on the individual tour. Partial scholarships are available for study tours and study abroad.

Most 4000 level classes and some 3000 level classes may also be taken at the graduate level. Please contact the Modern Languages Department if you need a 5000 level class that is not already listed in the class schedule.

French Major Requirements

Total hours: 39-55 Elementary French   0-8 Hours FRCH 1114 Elementary French I   FRCH 1224 Elementary French II   A maximum of eight hours of credit for Elementary French may be earned by examination. Alternatively, one (1) year of high school French may be substituted for French 1114 and one (1) more year of high school French for 1224. The Departmental Placement Test, when available, may allow the student to place into a section of FRCH 2223. Elementary additional language   0-8 Hours The same testing or placement conditions apply here as for Elementary French.
