Education Dr. Rozilyn Miller has called UCO her "professional home" since January 1997 when she began teaching public speaking and communication for teachers as an adjunct. She was hired full-time in August 1998 and became Program Coordinator for the Speech, Drama, and Debate Secondary Education Certification Program. This led to her establishing and coaching a successful Individual Events Forensics Team (1997-2004) which won national championships in three events in 2004. More significant than the awards and trophies won during these years was the experience of collaborating with future teachers in competition, running high school and college tournaments, providing a space for students to "stretch" their abilities, and watching "students" transition into successful teachers, coaches, and directors. In July 2005, the Department of Mass Communication was created by the merging of Communication and Journalism. Dr. Miller was elected Assistant Chair, beginning a new phase in her UCO career. With a history of leadership based on her experiences directing theatre, coaching forensics, and coordinating programs, she pursued opportunities to participate in UCO leadership programs: Leadership UCO, Class V (2007-2008); Educators' Leadership Combo Academy, Class XI (2008-2009); and two years in Educators’ Leadership Higher Education Department Chair Academy, Class I and Class II (2009-2010 and 2010-2011). In December 2007, she earned her doctorate, completing a long journey of juggling doctoral work with a full-time teaching position, coaching, and increasing leadership responsibilities. Her dissertation focused on the scholarship of teaching and learning utilizing arts-related teaching approaches to work toward critical consciousness and social justice. Dr. Miller was elected Chair of Mass Communication effective in August 2009. She was also selected for Director of the Leadership Minor in Fall 2009. Dr. Miller's teaching expertise is currently focused on gender studies, organizational communication, and leadership. She has been honored with the 2008 Liberal Arts Outstanding Service Award; the 2003 Oklahoma Speech Theater Communication Association Fred Tewell Outstanding Communication Professor Award; and the 2002 Liberal Arts Outstanding Creative Activity Award. Her students have presented research papers at the Oklahoma Speech Theatre Communication Association, the Sooner Communication Conference, the Central States Communication Association, and the Theodore Clevenger, Jr. Undergraduate Honors Conference at the Southern States Communication Association Convention.
