Leadership Minor

One of the single greatest determining factors of success is the ability to be a highly effective leader. Leadership skills are valued and respected and have become increasingly pursued in the workforce. UCO offers the Leadership Minor which provides students with essential leadership qualities and principles that will enhance and solidify success both in the classroom and the workplace.

At the University of Central Oklahoma, we believe that all students have the capacity to lead. Leadership does not require formal authority or position and can be practiced by anyone interested in making a contribution and influencing a more positive future. Every student leader has the ability to affect individuals, teams, organizations, the community, and society.

Leadership is a personal journey leading to the understandings and skill sets that encourage and allow students to positively and ethically influence and mobilize others.  The development of leadership begins with personal initiative and awareness – understanding one’s passions, motivations, strengths, limits, and personal values.  The process of self-discovery is ongoing, and the pursuit of leadership requires perseverance and a commitment to perpetual learning.

The office of Leadership Central exists to provide, deliver and support leadership initiatives on UCO’s campus. Leadership Central also supports civic and political discussions that enhance the university’s ability to react to local community needs and initiatives. Consistently engaging state and legislative leaders, Leadership Central also supports RUSO and university legislative priorities.

As UCO’s President Don Betz stated, “Leaders are passionate, persistent learners and doers.  They embrace the challenge of change and are energized by those they serve.  Leaders model the way for us.  They are the change.”

UCO’s Leadership Minor provides students a foundation for modeling effective change and can be tailored to fit any degree program. Selected courses will require involvement in activities providing practical experiences in leadership opportunities. Students with a minor in Leadership will find themselves more marketable after graduation as well as better prepared to be productive members of a changing workforce and changing society.
