The University of Central Oklahoma -- home to the first comprehensive creative writing program in Oklahoma -- now offers an M.F.A. in Creative Writing, beginning Fall 2008.

Program history

UCO has been offering coursework in creative writing for almost forty years and has well established B.A. and M.A. programs in the field. Over the years, notable authors including James Dickey, Paul Engle, and Horton Foote have helped to shape the curriculum and to guide student writers at UCO.

The new M.F.A. - a comprehensive program:

The Master of Fine Arts, UCO's new terminal degree program in creative writing, offers a range of courses designed to prepare students to become professional writers while also providing them with the skills and credentials to become university educators.

Learn the techniques . . .

The new degree offers students a chance to participate in sequential workshops that address different phases of the writing process-- a step-by-step approach to the creation of literary work.

In addition to workshops, the new degree program offers students the opportunity to ground their technique in a solid understanding of the art of the past and present through a selection of courses in literature designed for creative writers.
