A letter from Dr. Laura Bolf-Beliveau, Program Coordinator
Welcome to the English Education Program at the University of Central Oklahoma. This website provides important information and links to resources pertinent to teacher education candidacy and certification. Upon successful completion of UCO's B.A. Ed. degree and after completing state requirements, graduates are certified to teach grades 6-12 in Oklahoma.
The discipline of English/language arts, sometimes called literacy education, is an evolving field, and as program coordinator, I regularly attend conferences, take a part in state and national meetings, and visit schools to stay current in the field of English education. I have sixteen years of teaching experience in urban, rural, and suburban settings. My experiences and knowledge will help you successfully negotiate this program.
Teacher candidates in this program take courses in the Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts and in the Department of Professional Teacher Education located in the College of Education and Professional Studies. Among other requirements, students are required to take three state certification tests, apply to Teacher Education and for student teaching, and maintain a grade point average of 2.75.
Three field experiences help prepare teacher candidates for middle and high school teaching. It is strongly recommended that you gain insight into both middle school (or junior high school) and high school. Valuable mentor teachers help guide students through the experience. More information can be found in the Teacher Education Handbook located here.
Please use the six tabs found to the left of this letter to find more information regarding UCO's English education program and state and national requirements for certification and success in your future career.
My office is located in the Liberal Arts Building, room 103A. I welcome questions and concerns.
