Welcome from the Dean

Our mission in the College of Liberal Arts is to “help students learn” through transformative educational experiences. A Liberal Arts education is critically important in our rapidly changing world as graduates move through multiple careers over the course of a lifetime. The Liberal Arts Experience equips students with skills essential to success in the world. In addition to providing discipline-specific skills, the Liberal Arts Experience prepares students to speak clearly, write well, appreciate difference, ask questions, act ethically, participate, value the past, encounter the present and create the future. The Liberal Arts Experience provides students with value-added experiences that will enrich their entire lives.

To complement excellent classroom instruction, Liberal Arts departments sponsor a wide range of activities outside the classroom that enrich our academic programs.  The Liberal Arts Dean’s Speaker Series, for example, hosts numerous guest speakers throughout the year, bringing a variety of locally and nationally known experts to UCO. For example, in the fall 2014 we shall embark on an exciting “Passport to Russia” semester with guest speakers, classes, films and events that address aspects of Russia’s history and culture.

Our student organizations are among the best in the region and in the nation, and several Liberal Arts student organizations have won national honors over the past three years. These organization enrich students’ academic knowledge while introducing them to other students studying their areas of interest.

Numerous scholarships and tuition waivers are available to Liberal Arts majors. The Liberal Arts website provides detailed information about application dates and scholarship criteria, and information is also available from each of the College of Liberal Arts’ academic departments.
