Blended Learning

Blended Learning is a dynamic topic in today’s higher education environment. It is typically described as the process of combining online and classroom-based instructional practices, but the scope of ideas and perspectives about blended learning are diverse and largely unfocused. While popular terms like the “flipped classroom” increase the dialogue about blended learning, these terms also serve to constrain this powerful learning practice. As interest continues to grow in blended learning strategies and techniques, important questions remain about how faculty, designers, developers, and leaders respond to this trend within their own practice.

How it Works

The Heartland eLearning Institute is comprised of three major components: an online pre-workshop, an on-site workshop, and an online post-workshop. Each element of the institute is designed to help you learn about new trends and practices as well as effectively incorporating these strategies into your courses. Our highly interactive program provides the unique opportunity to work on a current or a new blended course prior to, during, and after the on-site workshop.

Online pre-workshop activities provide a flipped-classroom approach so the day of the workshop attendees can actively engage in hands-on and collaborative activities. The workshop shares best practices for instructional design and pedagogy to support student success based on the latest research in elearning and neuroscience of learning including:

  • New Normal: Examining Demographic Shifts in Today’s Student Population & Workforce

  • Concept to Compliance: Proactively Navigating Accreditation, Federal Regulations & Accessibility

  • Online Human Touch: Personalizing Learning Environments from Point of First Contact through Graduation

  • Scaffolding Success: Reconceptualizing Syllabi, Objectives, Rubrics & Discussion Boards

  • Active Learning: Integrating Neuro-Instructional Design and Neuropedagogy to Increase Student Engagement, Meet Course Objectives, and Achieve Program Outcomes

  • High Touch Technologies & Applications: Utilizing Interactive Technologies and Applications to Support Activities and Assessment

  • Exemplar Courses: Designing Courses That Personalize Learning Environments In Innovative Ways

Attendees will learn firsthand how to integrate “high touch” into all aspects of their course design from an interactive syllabus, engaging course content, innovative discussion boards, and assessments that scaffold lower to higher order thinking. Attendees will also experiment with different technologies and applications during the workshop to identify innovative methods for enhancing communication and creating rich multi-dimensional course content. The workshop culminates in a collaborative session in which attendees discuss their courses, key resources, and action items.
