- How do I know if I qualify for In-State Residency?
If you are a United States Citizen or a Permanent Resident and you have lived in Oklahoma for at least 12 consecutive months you may submit a Residency Application Packet to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for review. These indicators do not guarantee In-State Residency; they are required as the minimum basis for consideration in determining Residency status. - Where do I get an application?
A petition to determine residency may be obtained online or from the Office of Admissions, NUC 126. - Will my Resident status automatically change after living in Oklahoma for 12 consecutive months?
No. It is the responsibility of the student to petition the Office of Undergraduate Admissions for Residency reclassification and to provide substantiating documentation in accordance with the OSRHE guidelines. - My Residency status does not match what I reported on my application to the University of Central Oklahoma. Why has it been changed?
The University of Central Oklahoma reserves the right to require documentation from any student before Residency status may be granted, regardless of applicant’s original indication of Resident status. - If I have attended the University of Central Oklahoma for more than one year, will I qualify for Residency re-classification?
Oklahoma State Regent’s policy defines attendance at an Institution of Higher Education as temporary. Therefore, a student neither gains nor loses Residency status through such attendance, regardless of duration. - I was granted Resident status at another Oklahoma Higher Education Institution. Will my status stay the same if I transfer?
Oklahoma Resident status at one Higher Education Institution does not guarantee such status at any other Higher Education Institution. According to the OSRHE policy each university or institution is responsible for determining Residency status on an individual basis based on interpretation of the policy guidelines. - My parent(s) claim me as a dependent on their State and Federal taxes. How is my Residency determined?
In addition to the normally required Residency documentation you will need to submit supporting documentation regarding your parents’ Residency status. This includes State and Federal taxes, Mortgage or Lease information, and Employment Verification. The legal Residence of a dependent person is that of his/her parents, or the legal residence of the parent or guardian who has legal custody or with which the student habitually resides.
- I have several close relatives that are Oklahoma residents. Can I reside with one of them and gain Residency?
No. If you are considered a dependent, your residency status is that of your parent or guardian with legal custody. - My parent or close relative graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma. Do I qualify for in-state tuition?
No. You must meet the requirements put in place by the OSRHE in determining Residency status. However, the University of Central Oklahoma does offer Legacy Tuition Waivers for students whose parents or grandparents are Broncho Alum. - If my parents own property or a second home and pay Oklahoma state taxes, will I qualify for in-state tuition?
No. Resident status is based on the location of your permanent domicile. This is considered to be your fixed, permanent home and where you (or your parents) habitually reside. Since the term domicile, as defined by the OSRHE, has two components, residence and intent to remain indefinitely, a person can have more than one residence but only one domicile. - If I make a certain score on the ACT or SAT, am I eligible to pay in-state tuition?
No. ACT and SAT scores have no bearing on determination of Resident status. - I live in a state that borders Oklahoma. Does that allow me to qualify for in-state tuition?
No. The University of Central Oklahoma does not participate in any in-state reciprocity agreements with bordering states. However, UCO is a member of the Academic Common Market. If you are a Funeral Service or Forensic Science major you may qualify for a tuition waiver. - I moved to Oklahoma for work. Does that qualify me for in-state tuition?
If you moved to Oklahoma as terms in acceptance of new full-time employment or were transferred to Oklahoma by your current employer you will need to submit a letter from your employer detailing this arrangement. In some cases this will provision in-state Resident status without the student having resided in Oklahoma for 12 consecutive months or more. For purposes of Residency, Military obligations do not qualify as work-transfers. - I married an Oklahoma resident and we live in the state. Can I qualify for in-state tuition?
If your spouse already holds Oklahoma resident status, you may qualify for in-state tuition. Please include a copy of your Marriage License, a verification of your spouse’s employment, and a copy of their State and Federal taxes. - I am an active-duty Military member (or the spouse/dependent of an active-duty military member). How is my Resident status determined?
A student attending an institution while on full-time active duty in the armed forces is considered as having a temporary residence in the state in which he/she is attending school; therefore, a student neither gains nor loses resident status solely by such military service. If you are an active duty Military member in state and wish to petition for Resident status you must still meet the basic definition of Resident status as defined by the OSRHE.
Active duty members of the armed forces and their spouses or dependents seeking a Residency re-classification must fill out the Residency Application Packet and submit all required documentation as defined by the University. In addition, they must also submit a copy of the armed forces members’ Leave and Earning Statement showing Oklahoma listed in the State Code field.
Alternatively, active duty armed forces members stationed in Oklahoma may be eligible for a Military Tuition Waiver. This waiver does not affect Resident status as defined by the OSRHE. For more information contact the Office of Undergraduate Admission as 974-2727.- I am not a U.S. Citizen but have obtained Permanent Resident status with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Do I qualify for residency for tuition purposes?
You will need to complete the Residency Application Packet and submit all required documentation along with a copy of your Permanent Resident card. Permanent Resident status does not automatically confer Oklahoma Resident status as defined by the OSRHE. - I was granted Oklahoma Residency. Is it possible to lose my Resident status?
Yes. If you establish residency in another state or if you are absent from Oklahoma for at least twelve months for purposes other than education, you may lose your Oklahoma residency status. Military personnel who have at one time been granted Residency status, but later report another state on their LES may lose their Oklahoma Residency status for purposes of Higher Education. - My Residency Application was not approved because I was unable to meet some of the requirements. Can I petition again?
Yes. If, at a later date, you feel that you meet all of the requirements for reclassification, you may submit a new Residency Application Packet to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and provide the needed documentation at that time. Additionally, the student may exercise the option to have their application reviewed by the Residency Appeals committee if they feel their claim was denied in error. The student is required to compose a letter to the committee outlining the reasons why they feel they should be granted Resident status for the purposes of Higher Education. - Once I have applied, how will I be notified about the decision?
