Mission Statement

The mission of the UCO Department of Chemistry is to provide students with sound foundations in the theory and application of chemistry and to instill good laboratory practice, critical thinking, and communication skills so that students can become productive, ethical, and engaged professionals in chemistry or related fields. The department also encourages professional growth of students and staff by seeking and implementing opportunities for scholarly work, scientific outreach, and community engagement.

Student Learning Objectives

The Department of Chemistry offers three degree options: Chemistry, Chemistry—ACS Certificate, and Chemistry—Health Sciences.

Chemistry/Chemistry-ACS

Upon completion of the CHEM or CHEM-ACS degree:

  1. Students will demonstrate an appropriate depth of knowledge of chemistry.
  2. Students will be able to properly carry out common laboratory procedures, properly use common laboratory instrumentation, and appropriately interpret experimental data.
  3. Students will demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively within a group environment.
  4. Students will demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly and effectively using oral and written communication.
  5. Students will utilize critical and creative thinking skills and strategies in order to engage in scholarly activities.
  6. Students will demonstrate an understanding of ethical standards and issues in chemistry and related fields.
  7. Students will be able to effectively use the chemical literature to obtain needed information.
  8. Students will be able to devise and carry out experiments and interpret experimental results in order to answer a research question in chemistry.
  9. Students will engage in transformative learning experiences in areas of leadership, service, learning and community service, or global competency.

Chemistry - Health Sciences

Upon completion of the CHEM Health Sciences degree:

  1. Students will demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly and effectively using oral communication.
  2. Students will be able to use common chemical instrumentation.
  3. Students will demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively within a group environment.
  4. Students will utilize critical and creative thinking skills and strategies in order to engage in research, scholarly, creative or design activities within their discipline.
  5. Students will demonstrate an understanding of ethical standards and issues related to their discipline.
  6. Students will demonstrate an understanding of how ethical decisions are made within their discipline through the examination of discipline-related examples and/or case studies.
  7. Students will engage in transformative learning experiences in areas of leadership, service, learning and community service, or global competency.
  8. Students will demonstrate an appropriate depth of knowledge and skills related to their discipline.
