We are pleased to announce the following recipients of the 2014-2015 scholarship awards:
Sophomore Natasha Abu-Fadel is pursuing a BFA in Dance Performance and has been awarded a Warren Armstrong Memorial Endowed Scholarship for Dance. Natasha ultimately wants to open her own dance studio in her home country of Lebanon. She wishes to educate others who love to dance and assist them in attaining their goals.
Kayleigh Adamek has been awarded the Bob E. Palmer Scholarship for the Visual Arts. Kayleigh is a senior studio art major with an emphasis in photography. She aspires to illustrate children’s books or to become a game studio concept artist.
The second PL Studios Graphic Design Endowed Scholarship was awarded to James Adams, a junior graphic design major. James has won multiple Addy Awards, including four in 2013 and four in 2014. He also had two entries chosen for display in the 2013 Future Student Design Competition.
The recipient of the F. Ann Shanks Outstanding Performer in Dance Award is dance performance major Shelby Allen. Shelby has been active on the UCO campus with the Kaleidoscope Dance Company, Sigma Kappa Sorority, Leaders of Tomorrow, the UCO Big Event, and volunteering with Central Pantry. She gives UCO credit for not only helping her grow as an artist but for also giving her numerous opportunities to develop her character, leadership ability, intellect and spirit. Shelby desires to teach future generations how to use dance to positively impact their lives.
Freshman Danny Argot is the recipient of the C.W. and Alfa Sasser ACM Scholarship for students with particular interest in religious, gospel or worship music. Danny is a Contemporary Music Performance major who plans to graduate in 2017. His future plans include working with his current band, The Argots, as well as serving on a church worship team.
Studio art major Rebecca Armon is a senior and has been active in the UCO Student Art Association, serving as secretary, vice president and president during her UCO tenure. Rebecca is a recipient of the Fullfilled Coffee: Living Fullfilled Initiative Scholarship. She plans to continue her art studies on a graduate level and ultimately pursue a teaching career in academia.
Violinist Jose Batty has participated in UCO’s Music Outreach for two years. Through the program, he wants to influence children to study music just as he was influenced as a child when musical performers visited his school. Jose received both the Brisch Family Music Outreach Endowed Scholarship and the Brisch Family Music Scholarship for Strings.
The Jamie Jacobson Memorial Endowed Scholarship was awarded to McKenzie Belcher, a junior dance performance major with a minor in leadership. She is active on the UCO campus, participating in Leaders of Tomorrow, the UCOSA Freshman Council, Sigma Kappa, Freshman Follies, Alpha Lamba Delta, the Kaleidoscope Dance Company, Central New Broncho Orientation Leader and as the named UCO Campus Leadership Outstanding Freshman of 2013. McKenzie’s ambition is to touch lives and inspire others to express themselves through dance.
Xiang Chen is an international graduate student from China majoring in piano performance. He received the Excellence in Piano Award and the Jan Pokorny Steel Music Endowed Scholarship. Xiang desires to learn as much about American culture and music through his UCO studies and to travel before returning to China.
Carolyn Click received two awards: the Sergeant Ryan Wood Freedom Art Memorial and the Dean’s Recognition Award for Art. Carolyn is a double major in art and forensic science and originally thought that art would just be a hobby. She changed her mind when she realized that forensic art would combine her love of science while fulfilling her creative passion for art. Carolyn desires to spend as much time as possible perfecting her skill levels in the art studio and analyzing the human face for future forensic purposes.
Elizabeth Collier is a junior dance education major and has served as secretary/historian and president for Kappa Phi. She was awarded the Warren Armstrong Memorial Endowed Scholarship for Dance. Elizabeth’s goal is to use the knowledge she has gained at UCO to spread the joy of dance to as many people as possible.
Senior Rebecca Craig is the recipient of the Hannah McCarty Memorial Endowed Performing Arts Scholarship and the College of Fine Arts and Design Dean’s Scholarship. Rebecca was recommended by faculty who said, “Her growth as a dancer, leader, and teacher is inspiring.” Rebecca’s mission is to help herself and others find themselves through dance.
Senior Annie Doan is an art education major and an awardee of the Fullfilled Coffee: Living Fullfilled Initiative Scholarship. While at UCO, she has been on both the President’s Honor Roll and Dean’s Honor Roll and has been involved with the Contemporary Arts Center. Annie has also been an active recruiter of other students to join her in working with the Arts Center’s youth camps. Annie states that UCO has given her the opportunity to explore and enhance her knowledge and experience with children.
Jackson Edge is a senior studio art major with a minor in art history. During his college career, he has been on both the President’s Honor Roll and the Vice President’s Honor Roll. He is pursuing his college education in order to improve his competency and to set an example for his six-year-old son. Jackson received the Fullfilled Coffee: Living Fullfilled Initiative Scholarship.
Carrie Eldrige has returned to UCO to pursue a second bachelor's degree in Interior Design. She is involved with the Student International Design Association and has been involved with the UCO Symphony Show House for three years. After graduation, Carrie plans to focus on sustainable designs for low income families. She is the recipient of the Tinker Credit Union Outstanding Design Scholarship.
David Ellis received the Robert Glenn Rapp Endowed Scholar Incentive Award. David is an incoming freshman from Tulsa, OK and plans to major in Guitar Performance. While in high school, David was a member of All District Band for six years and All State Jazz Band for one year.
Bassoonish Jeremiah Eshelman is a double major in music performing and business management. After completing his degrees at UCO, he plans to attend the instrument repair school at Redwing in order to become a bassoon repair specialist. Jeremiah has been awarded the Jill Marderness Bassoon Endowed Scholarship.
Sophmore Chris Evans is a music theatre arts design major. He is the recipient of the D. Getzoff Endowed Theatre Design Scholarship. Chris aspires to one day use his design skills on Broadway productions.
Music theatre major Abbey Fitzjarrell is the recipient of the Tamara Long Endowed Music Scholarship. While at UCO, Abbey has been actively involved in many theatre productions, including The Full Monty, No No Nanette, Macabret, Holidays at Home and Side Show. Upon graduation, she plans to audition for equity theatre companies, cruise ships and Broadway national tours.
Sophomore Paige Fristoe is a dance performance major. Paige sees her UCO education as preparing her not only to be a better dancer but also to learn how to focus, multi-task and work with unstoppable drive. Paige was awarded a Lorraine Remmel Watson Dance Scholarship.
Art education major Vanessa Lynn Grayson is involved in the local community volunteering at Good Shepard Catholic School and working as an Autism Oklahoma volunteer. She sees art as a way to communicate, overcome challenges and build positive self-esteem. Vanessa is a recipient of the Fullfilled Coffee: Living Fullfilled Initiative Scholarship.
Senior Shaye Gunter is a recipient of the Jamie Jacobson Memorial Endowed Scholarship. Shaye has been involved as a church youth group volunteer, a participant on the CRU Student board and a member of Sigma Phi Lambda. Shaye desires to use her UCO education to reach and inspire others.
Bryant Hayes is a sophomore theatre performance major. He has been on the Dean's Honor Roll and is a member of the theatre publicity crew. Bryant sees theatre as an opportunity to step in the shoes of someone else and experience their way of living. He was awarded a Barbara K. Gilmore Drama Scholarship.
Mikayla Hollis is a cellist who wants to share her love of music with students in order to inspire them, assist them with their progress in music and help them be better musicians. Mikayla is a recipient of the Brisch Family Music Outreach Endowed Scholarship. Mikayla’s career goals include pursuing graduate degrees and teaching at a university.
Miranda Ingram is a recipient of the Lorraine Remmel Watson Dance Scholarship. Miranda is a junior who has been involved with the Kaleidoscope Dance Company, Alpha Lamba Delta and has been on the Dean's Honor Roll. Her future aspirations include performing with a jazz/contemporary dance company.
Senior Mark Johnson is a vocal music education major. While at UCO, he has been active in Leaders of Tomorrow Council, Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, the Collegiate National Association for Music Educators, American Choral Directors Association, UCO Concert Chorale, UCO Chamber Choir and UCO Opera. He cites his music study as giving him opportunities to travel abroad, build lifelong friendships, express his beliefs and collaborate with amazing people. Mark was chosen for the Kent Kidwell Leadership in Music Award.
The recipient of the new Debra Papajohn Reed Memorial Endowed Scholarship for theatre and musical theatre majors is Sarah Johnson. Sarah is a sophomore musical theatre major and has been active in the Theatre Club, worked with UCO’s production of Good Vibrations and has served as the entertainment editor for the Southern Accent Paper. Sarah’s goal is to learn every angle of her craft from stage design to makeup technique, performance and piano.
Senior vocal music performance major Griffin LaVictoire has been awarded the Kay Starr Music Scholarship. During his UCO tenure, Griffin has been involved in productions of L'Elisir d'Amore and Dido and Aeneas and was a soloist in Edmond Community Chorale's presentation of The Messiah. Griffin plans to attend graduate school after completing his bachelor's degree.
Pianst Buyun Li is the recipient of the Excellence in Piano Scholarship. Buyun has placed in numerous piano competitions in her home country of China, including third place in the Hong Kong International Piano Invitation Competition, first place in the two piano category in Guangdong Province Competition and first place in the Double Practice Competition at the XingHai Conservatory of Music in China. She is a senior piano performance major at UCO.
Pianist Chang Liu was given the Peggy M. Spence Endowed Piano Scholarship. Chang is a junior and has played for the Ladies of Oklahoma City Music Competition, the Oklahoma Music Teacher's Association Competition and has been involved in music outreach, performing at local nursing homes. Chang plans to pursue a graduate degree upon completion of his bachelor's degree.
Juliette Lloyd is a double major in theatre performance and marketing. She has been instrumental in the reinstatement of the UCO chapter of Alpha Psi Omega Theatre Honor Society and used her marketing skills to create a public relations event for the chapter’s first project. Juliette states that her current goal is to, “learn and grow as much as I can while in school. I think that is the best way I can prepare myself to go out into the real world.” Juliette was given the Dean’s Recognition’s Award in Theatre Arts.
Theatre performance major Casey Longacre is a sophomore and has been awarded a Barbara K. Gilmore Drama Scholarship. Casey's UCO activities include being active with the Rowling School of Witchcraft and Wizardry Club, participating in Freshman Follies and being cast in the show Measure for Measure. Casey's goal is to be involved in all aspects of theatre, including performing, technical elements and stage managing.
Shenghui Luo is a junior violin performance major from China. He is a member a UCO Leadership Initiative Chamber Music Program trio. In the future, he plans to continue expanding upon his musical knowledge by pursuing a master’s degree. Shenghui is the recipient of the Robert Glenn Rapp Upper Level Music Endowed Scholarship.
Incoming freshman Kendrick McKinney is a recipient of the Robert Glenn Rapp Endowed Scholar Incentive Award. Kendrick is from Yukon, OK and plans to major in instrumental music education. Kendrick was a member of COCDA All-Region band for six years and the All-State Jazz Band for two years.
Double major Kristin Merritt is pursuing degrees in theatre performance and pre-law. Kristin is an awardee of the Barbara K. Gilmore Drama Scholarship. Kristen's UCO experiences have included being in the production of bobrauschenbergamerica and being a presenter for the 2014 Transformative Learning Conference. Kristin plans to continue her education in law once she completes her undergraduate degrees.
Kamel Muhammed is the recipient of the Rukmini Ravikumar and Junaid Babar Design Scholarship as well as the Sergeant Ryan Wood Community/World Service Award. Kamel is a graduate student in design and has volunteered with the Syrian Red Crescent, the American Red Cross, and most recently at the OU Medical Center. He has been identified by faculty as always helping other students understand computer techniques so that they can complete their work and assignments.
Kangwa Mundende is a senior music performance major with an emphasis in double bass and minors in jazz studies and music composition. His UCO activities include playing with the UCO Symphony Orchestra, the UCO Chamber Orchestra, the Symphonic Band and the Jazz Ensemble. He has also performed in UCO opera productions and musical theatre pit orchestras. In the future, he wants to write music for film, television and video games. Kangwa received the Freda J. Cross Scholarship for the Arts.
Jeff Nelson is the recipient of the Hannah McCarthy Theater Performance Scholarship. He is a second year theater education major and has participated in six performances during his time at UCO. His future goals include teaching in a high school and then continuing his education to teach at the university level.
Graphic design major Jane Nguyen was chosen for the PL Studios Graphic Design Endowed Scholarship. During her time at UCO, she has been active in the Vietnamese Student Association, a member of AIGA, OK, and the winner of the Brass Ring Award for the Best of Show Painting.
Austin Oliver is a sophomore theatre/communciation education major. During his time at UCO, he has been active in Alpha Psi Omega and the publicity crew for the theatre department. He also received the Theatre Excellence Award for the 2012/13 academic year. Austin was awarded a Barbara K. Gilmore Drama Scholarship.
McKenna Olsen received the Dr. Cheryl Meyers Endowed Scholarship for Design. McKenna is a senior interior design major who is active in both the International Interior Design Association and the Student Interior Design Association. Her passion is to design for a better quality of life while promoting sustainability.
Kiara Luisa Perez is a senior art education major whose goal is to teach others how to use art as a way to express themselves and to find freedom. Kiara is one of five students receiving the Fullfilled Coffee: Living Fullfilled Initiative Scholarship. In addition to her arts studies, Kiara has been a member of UCO’s Cross Country/Track team, an active participant in Lifegroups and has taught overseas.
The first recipient of the John Clinton Orchestra Scholarship is Orlanda Ramirez. Before attending UCO, he received his associate's degree from Oklahoma City Community College in psychology. Through UCO's music leadership program, he has traveled all over Oklahoma to educate high school students about the life of a college musician. Orlanda was also a member of the 2014 UCO Chamber Orchestra that traveled throughout Bavaria, Germany to perform a series of concerts.
Freshman Heidi Ravelo is the recipient of the Linda Cameron Dance Scholarship as well as the Westmoreland Fun Fund Scholarship. She was nominated by faculty for her happy demeanor and warm smile each and every day. She is described as always joking and laughing with friends and as a person who has immersed herself in campus life at UCO.
Lydia McBee Reed is a sophomore theatre performance major. She has been a regional competitor for the Irene Ryan Scholarship, received the 2013 Outstanding Theater Student Award and was cast as "Isabella" in UCO's production of Measure for Measure. Lydia is a recipient of the Barbara K. Gilmore Drama Scholarship.
Theatre performance major Jessica Roark was an awardee of the Barbara K. Gilmore Drama Scholarship. She has worked with the Fine Arts Institute Theatre Camp, was the assistant director for Anne of Green Gables in the fall and also judges regional speech and debate tournaments. She looks forward to the amazing experiences will she continue to have in her tenure at UCO's Theatre Department.
Ashlyn Rudy, a dance performance major with a minor in religious studies, is the recipient of the Linda Cameron Dance Scholarship. She has been on the Dean’s Honor Roll, is a member of Sigma Kappa, and spent last summer working at an orphanage in Kenya. Ashlyn considers dance a creative outlet in which to tell stories that can impact lives.
Wylee Sanderson is the recipient of the Eric Page Jacobson Portofolio Award and the Sergeant Ryan Wood Memorial Essay Award. Wylee is a sophomore graphic design major with a minor in illustration. In the future, he would like to combine his interest in clothing and motorcycles to open a clothing boutique where he can merge his love for tasteful design with the ruggedness of the biker culture.
Ann Schrock is a student who has returned to UCO after being away for several years. She wants to encourage others not to give up but rather to believe in themselves as they pursue their musical dreams. She is active in UCO’s Music Outreach Program and hopes to one day work with El Sistema, a music program in Oklahoma City for underprivileged children. Ann was awarded both the Brisch Family Music Outreach Endowed Scholarship and the Don Betz Leadership in the Arts Award.
Percussionist Stephen Schultz has been active in the music outreach program as a rhythm section clinician at Edmond North High School. He enjoys assisting the students with components of jazz and feels that his teaching abilities grow as he gains experience working with the students. Stephen is one of four music students that were presented the Brisch Family Music Outreach Endowed Scholarships.
McKenna Sendall is a graphic design major that has been described as a strong conceptual thinker and creative problem solver. She received four ADDY awards this year for her design work. McKenna was chosen for the Dean's Recognition Award in Design. McKenna's goal as a designer is to push the boundaries of my design skills further than the day before.
The Melvin Lee Music Educator Scholarship was presented Megan Shane. Megan is a vocal music education major who is involved in the Delta Zeta Sorority and is a member of the Collegiate National Association for Music Educators.
Ryne Swope is a sophomore dance performance major. Ryne is a member of the Kaleidoscope Dance Company and will be performing with UCO's SummerStock production of Peter Pan. He plans to dance professionally after college. Ryne is a recipient of the Lorriane Remmel Watson Dance Scholarship.
Sophomore Christina Thompson is a theatre performance major and has been awarded the Barbara K. Gilmore Drama Scholarship. She was part of the sound crew for UCO's production of bobrauschenbergamerica in 2014 and spent her high school years participating in competitive speech and All-State Choir. Christina's goal is to motivate others in the same way that her teachers and fellow actors have inspired her.
Rachel Tice is a junior dance performance major that considers it an honor to receive the Hannah McCarty Memorial Endowed Performing Arts Scholarship. She feels that in receiving this scholarship she is entrusted to carry on Hannah’s legacy of overcoming hardship and her love of the performing arts. Rachel’s ultimate goal is to use dance to share life, love, meaning, purpose, stories and emotions for herself and others.
Senior Elizabeth Van Horn is a double major in Dance Education and Dance Performance with a GPA of 4.0. She was recommended by faculty as being an outstanding student. She states that her passion for dance is what began her journey here at UCO and believes that this passion will lead her to further success in the future. Elizabeth is the recipient of the Dean’s Recognition Award in Dance.
Rebekah Wallace is a double major in dance education and special education and was given the Richard Denson Endowed Dance Scholarship. She teaches dance for the Arkansas - Oklahoma Division of the Salvation Army and has been a prizewinner in the Traditional Irish Dance Competition. Rebekah wants to use her dance skills and education in the future to open a studio for underprivileged children.
Tate Weiss received a Warren Armstrong Memorial Endowed Scholarship for Dance. She loves being at UCO and feels honored to be a dance performance major. She is active with the Kaleidoscope Dance Company and Alpha Gamma Delta. Tate’s future aspirations consist of becoming a professional dancer and traveling the world.
The 2014 Presser Scholar is Travis Welborn, an instrumental music education major from Tulsa, OK. Travis’s UCO activities have included participating in the Golden Key National Honor Society, Kappa Kappa Psi, the UCO Wind Symphony, the Jazz Band and being drum major for the UCO Symphonic Band. Travis is looking forward to completing his degree so that he can begin dispersing his knowledge and passion for music to future generations.
Sophomore Valerie Williams received the Eric Page Jacobson Portfolio Award. Valerie is involved in the Student Interior Design Association. She is working to get an internship with a prominent design or architecture firm and wants to begin her own design firm once she is established in the field.
Senior music major Sarah Willson has been a student leader in her music ensembles and served as the president of the Historical Performance Activity Group. Sarah’s objective as a music educator is “to help students reveal what is yet to discover, what is inside them and all the possibility that corresponds with the collaboration of other humans to create the most passionate form of art: music.” She has been awarded the Academic Excellence Endowed Award in Honor of Ted Honea, the Brisch Family Music Scholarship for Strings, and the Dean’s Recognition Award in Music.
Amber Zuniga is a voice major with a collaborative piano minor. She has been given the Frank Nelson Endowed Scholarship for Collaborative Piano. Amber is a member of the Central Piano Triet, which performs music for six hands (three people on one piano). She also teaches private voice and piano. Amber plans in the future to open her own private voice and piano studio while pursuing her master’s degree.
