UCO Celebrates the Art of Package Design in 'Beyond the Box' Exhibit

September 12, 2013

The University of Central Oklahoma Department of Design will open “Beyond the Box,” an exhibit dedicated to the art of package design, on Sept. 19 in the Donna Nigh Gallery with a reception from 4-5:30 p.m.

The reception is free and open to the public.  The Donna Nigh Gallery is located on the third and fourth floors of the Nigh University Center.

“Due to being three-dimensional, package design has multiple opportunities for a designer to communicate through visual language, using the design alphabet of shape, color, material, typography, illustration and branding to encompass a company’s value,” said Amy Johnson, M.F.A., associate professor of graphic design at Central.

“In the department of design, we teach students to utilize visual language and incorporate multiple points that ensure a design is never boring.”

“Beyond the Box” is an exhibit cumulated from five different package design projects within the department that showcase more than 25 upperclassmen design students at Central.

“Our package design class is unique as students explore more than just labeling.  Students explore a great level of concept development, strategy, critical thinking and creativity,” said Ruki Ravikumar, M.F.A., chair of the Department of Design.

Central design students have been very successful with original designs for packages in various regional and national level competitions.
