UCO Design Department To Host Fundraising Concert and Exhibit Opening

October 20, 2011

From the opportunity to get a "360" view of design to a chance to "jam" to support students, the University of Central Oklahoma Department of Design will host a variety of events that are open to the public Oct. 26-27.

The first event, "Paper Jam," the design department's annual fundraiser, will take place at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 26 at the UCO Jazz Lab.  The event will feature five local bands including "O Fidelis," "FOS," "People People," "Good Morning Grizzlys" and "The Grown Ups."

UCO design students who are a part of Inktank Studio, one of the semi-professional design studios on campus, organize the event.  Inktank provides students the opportunity to work with real-world clients.  Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door or by calling the department at (405) 974-5200.

The following evening, the Department of Design will open the exhibit "360: An Exhibition of Work from the Department of Design" with a reception from 4 - 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 27 in the Donna Nigh Exhibit Hall located in the Nigh University Center.

The exhibit will feature UCO graphic and interior design student work from each course level chosen by design faculty members with the intention of illustrating design work from each level of the learning process.  The department hopes it will highlight the huge leaps of progress made by the design students.

The exhibit title, "360," was inspired by the desire to represent a complete overview of the design department.

"Our underlying theme for the exhibit is based on a Slinky toy," said Rukmini Ravikumar, M.F.A. and Chair of the Department of Design.

"A Slinky has constant movement and energy - it's the perfect representation of design. Design is always morphing and always keeps moving and it embodies agile thinking and flexibility."

The design exhibit is free and open to the public and will be open Oct. 27 - Dec. 12.

Prior to the exhibition opening, both design students and the public will have the opportunity to attend a lecture given by Charlie Lazor and John Jennings, nationally renowned designers, from 10 a.m. to noon in UCO's Pegasus Theater in the UCO Liberal Arts Building.  Lazor and Jennings will discuss the realities of the professional world of design and conduct a question and answer session with lecture attendees.
