The University of Central Oklahoma Wind Symphony will present their first performance of the fall semester at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 16 in UCO’s Mitchell Hall Theater.

The concert will feature compositions by Gustav Holst, Kenneth Hesketh and Philip Sparke as well as vocals by the Edmond Community Chorale.

Compositions include Holst’s “A Moorside March,” Hesketh’s “Danceries,” and Sparke’s “Dance Movements.”          

“This opening concert of the wind symphony season will be full of energy and excitement.  This is a very young band, dominated by a majority of new members, representing a very talented freshman class,” said Brian Lamb, D.M.A, director of bands at UCO.          

“These young people have stepped right into the roles and responsibilities that go with playing in this premier ensemble and they are preparing to perform these magnificent and moving wind works.”

Following the performance, the UCO School of Music will host a CD release party for “American Byways: Music of Michael Daugherty,” a new album that features the UCO Wind Symphony performing Daugherty’s compositions.

Daugherty is one of the most commissioned, performed, and recorded composers on the music scene today.  Last October he visited the UCO campus to conduct a series of master classes and established a solid professional relationship with Lamb and the School of Music.  

The new album will be on sale at a special price of $10 at the party.  Additionally, refreshments will be provided.          

The UCO Wind Symphony concert is part of the UCO Passport program, which selects a country or region to celebrate during the fall semester annually.  This semester Central chose to celebrate England, the native country of Holst, Hesketh and Sparke.
