UCO's Department of Art and Department of Design Earn National Accreditation

November 19, 2013

The University of Central Oklahoma Department of Art and Department of Design recently became the only university departments in the state to earn accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).

A multiple-year project, this accreditation seeks high standards on all levels, including an evaluation of the university, the college, the institution’s library and resources and the individual departments pursuing accreditation.

“Earning this national accreditation has been a tremendous effort of teamwork,” said Charleen Weidell, M.F.A., chair of the department of art.

The process of accreditation also includes a microscopic look at all things inclusive to the individual departments, including studio space, equipment, technology and an emphasis on the teaching, curriculum, syllabi and assignments as reflected in the students’ work.

“One of NASAD’s primary concerns is whether we’re preparing our students to work professionally in their field of study,” said Weidell.

This accreditation validates that Central meets this standard and complies with NASAD’s pledge, as stated on their website, to “seek optimum learning conditions for art and design students and develop the strength and quality of art and design in higher education by assisting institutional members and their facilities to do their best work.”

UCO’s NASAD accreditation is valid through the academic year of 2018-2019.

“This accreditation has been a huge morale booster to our departments.  We’ve proved to ourselves that we work well together as a faculty and that our standards and practices are nationally endorsed,” concluded Weidell.
