UCO Resident Artist Valery Kuleshov To Present Scholarship Concert With Music Faculty

March 19, 2012

University of Central Oklahoma Artist-in-Residence Valery Kuleshov will join with Tess Remy-Schumacher, D.M.A., Central professor of cello and chamber music, to present the College of Fine Arts and Design's annual fundraising concert "Valery and Friends" at 7 p.m. March 29, at the UCO Jazz Lab, located at 100 E. Fifth St. in Edmond.

The concert will raise funds for piano scholarships within Central's School of Music. A donation of $50 per person is recommended to attend the event.

An internationally honored artist of the Russian Federation, Kuleshov and renowned cellist Remy-Schumacher will perform "Sonata in G minor, Op.19" for cello and piano by Sergei Rachmaninoff.

"Valery is an amazing pianist whose artistry captivates audiences and continues to earn a loyal following throughout the Oklahoma City metro," said Lori Alspaugh, development director for Central's College of Fine Arts and Design.

Among many awards, Kuleshov won the silver medal at the 1993 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He has performed throughout Europe, North America, South America, New Zealand and Japan.

"Each time he performs, we have new audience members and undoubtedly, we see their faces again the next year," Alspaugh said.

The concert will open with a performance from Central scholarship recipient Luisa Matthynssens. Matthynssens, a junior piano performance and pedagogy major, will perform "Ballade No. 3 in Ab Major" by Frederic Chopin.

Guests may sample a wide variety of refreshments, including wine from Edmond Wine Shop and hors d'oeuvres such as artisan cheeses from Whole Foods Market.
