University of Central Oklahoma artist-in residence Valery Kuleshov will join with faculty members from Central's School of Music to present the annual fundraising concert "Valery and Friends" at 7 p.m., March 23 at the UCO Jazz Lab, located at 100 E. Fifth St. in Edmond.
The all-Schumann concert will raise funds for piano scholarships and the All-Steinway School Initiative at Central. Recommended donation to attend the event is $50 per person. Refreshments, including a wine and candy bar, will be served.
For the program, Kuleshov will be joined for a piano and cello duet with Tess Remy-Schumacher, Ph.D., Central professor of cello and chamber music.
"Rehearsing and performing chamber music by Robert Schumann with such an outstanding and rare artist as pianist Valery Kuleshov has been a musical dream come true for me," said Remy-Schumacher.
In addition, Kuleshov will collaborate with the Central faculty string quartet which includes Remy-Schumacher; Doris Morris, adjunct instructor of violin and recorder; Ralph Morris, Ph.D., director of the Symphony Orchestra; and Hong Zhu, Ph.D., professor of violin and chamber music.
Among his many awards, Kuleshov won the silver medal at the 1993 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He has performed throughout Europe, North America and South America, as well as in New Zealand and Japan.
"His talent is beyond compare, and we are so fortunate to have him here at Central," said Lori Alspaugh, development director for the UCO College of Fine Arts and Design.
Reservations are required to attend the benefit, and can be made by contacting Marilyn Kreidler at (405) 974-3768 or mkreidler@uco.edu.
