June 3, 2010oliver

The lights at Edmond's Mitch Park Amphitheatre will again burn bright as Summerstock, in its new partnership with the University of Central Oklahoma's College of Fine Arts and Design, returns for its 2010 season with the popular family musical "Oliver!" at 8:30 pm on June 17, with performances each Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening through July 2.
Based on the Charles Dickens novel "Oliver Twist," "Oliver!" is a musical theatre classic. With both drama and humor, the story takes us through the journey of an orphan boy who runs away from an abusive workhouse only to fall in with a gang of youthful pickpockets led by the manipulative Fagin. The well-known score includes such songs as "Consider Yourself," "Where Is Love?," "As Long As He Needs Me" and "Food, Glorious Food."
"Many members of the cast are experienced, professional actors and have even played these roles before," said Billie Thrash, Summerstock's artistic director.

The cast includes notables Don Taylor, active as an actor and director in Oklahoma City for the last 12 years, as "Fagin," reprising this role for the third time and best remembered by audiences as the "Scarecrow" in Summerstock's "Wizard of Oz;" Beth Adele as "Nancy," a veteran to the stages of Lyric Theater, OKC Philharmonic and CityRep; and Ethan Carr, active in Spotlight Theater productions, as "Oliver."
"Oliver was one of the first musicals I ever saw. I vividly remember how moved I was by the Dickens tale being conveyed with such engaging music and characters. The role of Nancy has been held close to my heart ever since," said Adele.
"Edmond is very fortunate to have the gifts of UCO, Summerstock Productions and the City of Edmond working together to deliver such a valuable, cultural experience for the entire community."

John Ferguson, well-known to late-night TV watchers as "Count Gregore," will be making a special appearance in "Oliver!" as "Dr. Grimwig."
The 2010 season will close with "All Shook Up," inspired by and featuring the songs of Elvis Presley, which will run Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from July 15 through July 24. Jay Krottinger, will be heading the cast of "All Shook Up" as "Chad." Krottinger is currently a UCO graduate student and has previously enjoyed a diverse music theatre career in New York City and on cruise ships all over the world.
Audience seating begins at 7:30 pm. All seating is general admission and is $12 for adults and $6 for students in grades K-12 and college students with ID. Children four and under are free.

Tickets can be purchased in advance through UCO's Mitchell Hall Theater box office using cash, check or credit card by calling (405) 974-3375. Tickets can be purchased using cash or check at the Mitch Park Amphitheatre before each performance.
