Grammy Award-Winning Saxophonist To Perform At UCO Jazz Lab

January 30, 2012

To celebrate 10 years of bringing the best in live jazz music to the Oklahoma City metro, the UCO Jazz Lab will welcome renowned Grammy Award-winning saxophonist and composer Kenny Garrett to perform in concert with the UCO Jazz Ensemble I at 8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 9.

The show is a part of the UCO Jazz Lab’s yearlong 10th Anniversary Concert Series, which includes special performances at the venue, located at 100 E. Fifth St. in Edmond.

Garrett will perform original compositions and will premiere several new jazz ensemble arrangements created for the event.

Garrett’s career spans more than 30 years and includes performances with several jazz icons like Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Mercer Ellington and Miles Davis.  He won a Grammy Award in the Best Jazz Instrumental Album category as part of the Five Peace Band with guitarist John McLaughlin, pianist Chick Corea, bassist Christian McBride and drummers Vinnie Colaiuta and Brian Blade for the 2009 album “Five Peace Band – Live.”

“Kenny Garrett is an amazing musician whose influence in modern jazz is as significant Michael Jackson was in the pop world,” said Brian Gorrell, head of the UCO Jazz Studies Division.

“I am so excited that our students will have the opportunity to play with Mr. Garrett.  This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for all of us. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the Jazz Lab’s 10th anniversary.”

Since the opening of the UCO Jazz Lab in March 2002, the Jazz Lab has become a hub of innovation in jazz education and entertainment.  In its 10-year history, the Lab has hosted renowned musicians such as Wynton Marsalis, Chris Botti, Ann Hampton Calloway, Chick Corea, Diane Schuur, Steve Tyrell, Jane Monheit, Jerry Jeff Walker and Maynard Ferguson, as well as the award-winning UCO Jazz Ensembles.

The Jazz Lab is unique in its three-fold purpose.  It serves as an educational facility for Central students, a live music venue where audience members can enjoy Hideaway Pizza and a full-service bar, and features a state-of-the-art recording facility.

Tickets to the concert are $40 and can be purchased by calling (405) 340-8552.  Reservations are strongly recommended.
