Music will fill the University of Central Oklahoma campus this month as the UCO School of Music presents the spring semester's first Symphony Orchestra performance, Wind Symphony performance and Symphonic Band concert, each in UCO's Mitchell Hall Theater.
At 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 14, the UCO Symphony Orchestra will take the stage for a special performance featuring Central faculty member soloists and Zach Reeves, guest cellist, in concert with the student orchestra. The orchestra will play Joseph Haydn's Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Oboe, Cello, Bassoon and Orchestra and "Ancient Airs" and "Danced" by Ottorino Repighi, 20th century Italian composer. Additionally, the orchestra will perform the overture to the 18th century Italian opera, "Il Matrimonio Segreto" by Domenico Cmarosa.
At 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 16, the UCO Wind Symphony will take the stage in a show featuring a variety of compositions. The Wind Symphony will perform Percy Grainger's landmark piece titled "Lincolnshire Posy," two of Ralph Vaughn Williams' compositions titled "Rhosymedre" and "Flourish for Glorious John" and Pierre Leeman's composition, "March of the Belgian Paratroopers."
"Percy Grainger's ‘Lincolnshire Posy' is considered by most band directors the world over as one of the top 10 most influential pieces ever written for wind bands," said Brian Lamb, D.M.A., Wind Symphony conductor.
"We're approaching the piece with a bit of reverence and awesome respect. It's a significant piece to put on a program."
Lastly, at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 17, the UCO Symphonic Band will take the stage for an exciting show featuring a wide range of compositions. The band will perform "Drammatico" by Fancis McBeth, "Rest" by Frank Ticheli, "Shadow Rituals" by Michael Markowsky, and "The Thunder" by John Phillip Sousa, among other compositions.
Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for senior citizens and non-UCO students and $4 for Central students with a UCO I.D. For tickets to these performances, call the UCO Mitchell Hall Theater Box Office at (405) 974-3375.
