UCO To Present Chamber Opera Performance

Feb. 17, 2012

The University of Central Oklahoma School of Music will present two contemporary American chamber operas titled, "A Hand of Bridge," and "Gallantry" at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 23 - 25 and 2 p.m., Feb. 26 at the Radke Fine Arts Theatre located in the UCO Center for Transformative Learning.

"A Hand of Bridge," composed by Samuel Barber, will feature four characters, played by Central opera students, engaged in an evening bridge game.  Each of the characters will sing an aria expressing the true thoughts they are experiencing while playing the card game with their friends.

"Gallantry," a comic chamber opera composed by Douglas Moore, is a parody of a soap opera, complete with sung commercial interruptions.  Similar to many actual soap operas, the play takes place in a hospital and follows the flippant relationships among the hospital staff and patients.

"Both of these chamber operas are highly entertaining and will definitely surprise the audience," said Kevin Eckard, D.M.A., UCO director of opera.

"Since contemporary American opera is gaining popularity and attention, we thought that it would be a great experience for our students to learn some of these contemporary works.  They are doing a fantastic job," he continued.

Tickets are $14 for adults, $10 for senior citizens and non-UCO students and $4 for Central students with a UCO I.D.  To purchase tickets, call (405) 974-3375 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
