The University of Central Oklahoma's Department of Dance will accept registration until Feb. 16 for its first-ever "Studio Day of Dance" for local dance studios and teams. The workshop is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Feb. 19 in Central's Health and Physical Education Building and Wantland Hall.
"Studio Day of Dance" was created by Jamie Jacobson, chair of Central's dance department, to provide opportunities for dance studios to experience a day of dance with college-level faculty as well as guest artists.
The day will include an advanced jazz class solely for male dancers, taught by guest Broadway performer Chip Abbott.
Abbott is a New York City-based choreographer and dancer. He has performed at the Fire Island Dance Festival with host Whoopie Goldberg and the National Black Awards hosted by Starr Jones-Reynolds, and has danced with River North Chicago Dance Company, the Houston Metropolitan Dance Company and the New York City-based Chase Brock Experience. Abbott most recently performed at the Kennedy Center's celebration of Roger L. Stevens, with host Liza Minnelli.
National hip-hop artist, John Ariete, will join the Central dance faculty in teaching intermediate and advanced hip-hop. Classes will also be offered in contemporary jazz, modern, ballet and music theatre dance. While some beginner levels are offered, prior dance experience is required.
At the end of the day, each studio or dance team will be allotted four minutes to present their work at an informal sharing.
The cost to participate is $50 per person which includes four classes and lunch. Individuals are also welcomed if their studio is unable to attend.
