UCO Begins 2013-14 Faculty Artist Concert Series with String Bassist Michael Geib

August 16, 2013

The University of Central Oklahoma School of Music kicks off the 2013-14 Faculty Artist Concert Series with string bass instructor Michael Geib, D.M., at 7:30 p.m., Aug. 27 at the UCO Jazz Lab, 100 E. Fifth Street in Edmond.

The Faculty Artist Concert Series, now in its fifth year, is a yearlong performance series that highlights the talents of Central music faculty members.  All performances take place on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Jazz Lab with proceeds supporting scholarships and the UCO School of Music.

Geib joined the Central faculty in 2010 with a diverse educational and professional background as an orchestral musician and jazz musician.

The first half of the program includes the classical compositions “Quintet No. 18” by Domenico Dragonetti, featuring a faculty and student string quintet, and Frank Proto’s “A Carmen Fantasy,” featuring faculty member Sam Magrill, D.M.A., on piano.

The latter half of the program will be a collection of jazz standards, including original compositions written by Geib and featuring members of the 5th Street Jazz Collective.

This concert is reflective of Geib’s teaching philosophy, which encourages students to be versatile and exposes them to the numerous opportunities string bass players have.

“The best and most practical education possible when studying the string bass is to have a sturdy grounding in both jazz and orchestral music,” Geib explained while discussing what enables students to become more marketable and successful in their musical careers.

The concert is also reflective of the School of Music’s priority towards collaborative efforts.

“I’m really excited to play these pieces alongside all the talent we have at the School of Music,” said Geib.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling the UCO School of Music at 405-974-5004.  Admission is free for Central students, faculty and staff with a Central I.D.
