The UCO Jazz Lab was recently recognized by readers of The Oklahoman and the Oklahoma Gazette as the "Best Place for Live Jazz & Blues" and the "Best Live Music Club" respectively.
Ballots appeared in both newspapers this summer asking readers to nominate their favorite people, places and events in the Oklahoma City metro in a variety of categories. Readers then subsequently chose the winners in each of the categories.
"It is a thrill to be recognized by these publications as a ‘best' in the area, and we thank the Oklahoma City metro community for their continued support," said Clint Rohr, manager of the Jazz Lab.
"From our award-winning students, popular local music groups, and world-renowned headliners, we strive to provide a relaxed environment that is focused on the art that is jazz music and its roots. To have performers that represent that art at a high level, and an audience that acknowledges and understands the commitment required to present such art is overwhelming," he continued.
Since the opening in March 2002, the UCO Jazz Lab has become a hub of innovation in jazz education and entertainment. In its 10-year history, the Lab has hosted renowned musicians such as Wynton Marsalis, Chris Botti, Ann Hampton Calloway, Chick Corea, Diane Schuur, Steve Tyrell, Jane Monheit, Jerry Jeff Walker and Maynard Ferguson, as well as the award-winning UCO Jazz Ensembles.
The Jazz Lab is unique in its three-fold purpose. It serves as an educational facility for Central students, a live music venue where audience members can enjoy Hideaway Pizza and a full-service bar, and features a state-of-the-art recording facility.
