The University of Central Oklahoma's Broadway Tonight Series will kick off its 15th season with Tony Award-nominee Judy Kuhn and the Young Voices of Edmond at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 24-25 at UCO's Mitchell Hall Theater.
Kuhn received worldwide recognition and critical acclaim as the voice of "Pocahontas" in the Walt Disney animated feature film "Pocahontas," as well as in the sequel "Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World." Kuhn's other film and television appearances include: "Enchanted" (ABC), "Law & Order" (NBC), "The Secret Life of Mary Margaret" (HBO), and "In Performance at the White House" (PBS), among other appearances.
Kuhn has also been recognized for her performances on Broadway. She has been nominated for three Tony Awards and three Drama Desk Awards for her work in The Roundabout Theatre Company's hit revival of "She Loves Me" and the American premiers of "Chess," "Les Miserables," and "Rags."
"Ms. Kuhn is an incredible talent who has decades of Broadway, television and film experience. It truly is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our students and The Young Voices of Edmond to perform with her," said Greg White, director of UCO's Broadway Tonight Series.
"Our students will gain so much insight from Ms. Kuhn about becoming a professional performer. I am excited for all of them to have this transformative experience."
The Young Voices of Edmond, a community choral group consisting of more than 100 children, ages five through 15, will perform alongside Kuhn. Angie McKenna, Sequoyah Middle School choral director and finalist for Oklahoma State Teacher of the Year, organizes and directs the choral group.
This is the third year the Young Voices of Edmond will have the opportunity to perform alongside a Broadway star. Last August, as part of the 2011-2012 Broadway Tonight Series, the group performed with Jodi Benson, the voice of Walt Disney's animated feature film "The Little Mermaid."
In addition to Kuhn's performance, the UCO Broadway Tonight 2012-2013 season will include special performances by Tom Wopat, best-known for playing "Luke Duke" in the "Dukes of Hazzard," Tony Award-winner Betty Buckley, Broadway's "Phantom" Franc D'Ambrosio, and world-renowned modern dance company Pilobolus.
During Kuhn's visit she will lead a music theatre master class for Central music theatre students.
A reception is scheduled following the Saturday evening performance, offering audience members a chance to meet Kuhn and the Young Voices of Edmond.
Tickets are $25 and can be purchased by calling the Mitchell Hall Theater box office at (405) 974-3375.
