April 6, 2011gianni

The University of Central Oklahoma's School of Music will present the classic, comic opera "Gianni Schicchi" at 7:30 p.m., April 14-16 and at 2 p.m., April 17 in Mitchell Hall Theater.

"Gianni Schicchi" is a one-act opera by Giacomo Puccini that is based on an incident mentioned in Dante's "Divine Comedy."  The opera follows the Donati family as they fight over their family fortune after the patriarch's demise. The family turns to the cunning title character to find a solution.

Central Professor of Voice and Director of Opera, Kevin Eckard, Ph.D., said that "Gianni Schicchi" is a perfect introductory opera.

"This was Puccini's only comedy, and it is a wonderful opera for adults who have never been to an opera before," said Eckard.

"The cast is very talented and has worked very hard on this production which will be sure to be quite entertaining for the audience."

The opera will be performed in English and last about an hour.

Ticket prices are $14 for adults, $10 for seniors, non-UCO students and UCO faculty and staff and $4 for UCO students with ID. The production is not recommended for those under 18.  To reserve tickets, call the Mitchell Hall Theater box office at (405) 974-3375.
