The Opera program at UCO is very proud of its faculty of seasoned professional performers, voice faculty and directors who guide students through a rigorous program of study designed to prepare students to be successful in their chosen profession. This program includes Voice Lessons, Acting, Dancing, Conducting, Opera Workshop, Diction and Choir.
Opera productions have a history of excellence and prepare students for a career in performance. This includes training in music from all periods: Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary and various styles from classical to operetta to traditional music theater. Opera at UCO puts on three major productions a year:
These productions are performed at the UCO Jazz Lab and give students an introduction to Opera and Operetta. Students perform a variety of scenes and learn acting, stage combat, movement and stage deportment for the operatic stage. These productions are open to all students who enjoy performing. Some of our programs: Mostly Mozart, A Night in England, A Romantic Evening, Gilbert and Sullivan Soiree andA Night in Italy.
In our Children’s Opera productions we prepare a full show that is taken on the road and performed at schools through out the state. This show is by audition and gives students the opportunity to work with children and prepares them for the responsibilities given to young artists in major opera companies. The production also give our students valuable experience performing in front of the most honest audience you can have, children, and allows them to reach out to students across the state and share the love of music. Past Seasons have included: Stone Soup, Little Red Riding Hood, Toy Shop, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Sid the Serpent.
These productions are done in Mitchell Hall and give students experience in performing full-scale major operatic works. These productions are with orchestra and allow students to develop the art of performing opera. Past productions include: Dido and Aeneas, Gianni Schicchi, Cosi Fan Tutte, The Medium, Susannah, La Perichole and The Old Maid and the Thief.
In addition to stage experiences, students have opportunities to participate in Master Classes and work with some of the most famous performers in the business of opera today. Past Master Class teachers include: Sherril Milnes, Sarah Coburn, Kyle Kettelsen, Leona Mitchell, Jennifer Aylmer and Jeffrey Peterson. Join us in the exciting and international world of Opera at UCO!
