Education Bldg. 307F My education includes a B.S. in physical education from Oklahoma State, and M.S. in exercise physiology from Washington State, an M.Ed. in counseling psychology from Central State University (UCO), and a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University of Oklahoma. You've heard of houses divided between OSU and OU, well, I'm a divided person, orange on one side, crimson on the other. As part of the Ph.D. experience I did a year of internship at the Family Therapy Program, University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada. That year was more formative than any other professional/educational experience I've had. It involved intense training in the family systems approach to clinical work. That, along with narrative therapy and psychology, form the basis for my theoretical orientation and approach to therapy cases. I would classify myself as falling outside of the dominant medical model being applied to mental health, and believe that psychology would be better served by a more holistic, ecological, and interactive model. In my view, a lineal/cause and effect model is a poor fit for psychology and has outlived its usefulness in our domain. I also believe there is very little probability that such a change will transpire. My current specialty is encouraging students to think outside of the box so they can become as confused as I am.Dr. Robert Doan, Ph.D., Professor and Student Clinician Supervisor
