Wondering which class to take?
UCO’s Center for Professional and Distance Education and The Office of Enrollment Management now offer extended hours for advising and assistance!
Sunday – Thursday

Distance Education at UCO is growing rapidly. The Distance Education division of CPDE supports faculty in the design and delivery of distance education courses. The division also creates tutorials and materials to assist students in distance education. There are two branches of distance education at UCO: online courses and Flex-Ed courses.
Online courses use the university's learning management system to deliver online and hybrid courses. In these courses, students can experience independent learning, group projects, live interaction with the class and instructor, and flexibility to learn any time, anywhere. Students take online courses during the same semester-based terms as other university courses. They are assigned to a class that will usually contain about 25 other students although that number can vary based on the course and the College.
Flex-Ed courses provide students with the most flexible way of earning college credit. Students can choose from Self-Paced Online Courses (SPOC) and Interactive Video Education (IVE) Courses. These options allow students to complete UCO courses from virtually anywhere in the world when it works best for them. (Add link SPOC and Interactive Video Education) Learn more about SPOC and IVE courses!
Regardless of the Distance Education course format, all courses are must meet quality standards for distance education delivery. SPOC and online courses are reviewed by a faculty committee and must score a 90% or higher or the UCOnline Course Quality Rubric to be offered. UCO also requires its distance education instructors to be trained as online, SPOC or IVE facilitators. These requirements help ensure that students who take distance education courses at UCO will have quality courses delivered by trained instructors.
The Distance Education Staff
In order to support faculty involved in the design and delivery of distance education, CPDE offers a variety of support services. The Distance Education team consists of a Director of Online Education, an Assistant Director for Research and Innovation, an Assistant Director for Creative Technologies, instructional designers, and multimedia and graphic design experts. We offer workshops, design support, course development, technical training, on-call support, hardware and software incentives, and financial incentives designed to further distance education at UCO. We also collaborate with other campus groups on technical projects.
