Academic Support Center FAQ
1. What services does the ASC provide?
The Academic Support Center offers college placement testing (CPT), study skills, and college placement test preparation. We also aide professors in different study programs via computer software and videos.
2. What is the placement test?
The College Placement Test is used to determine your readiness for college level courses. The test is computerized and special testing accommodations are provided upon request.
3. How many tests are there?
There are essentially three tests.
English
Reading
Elementary Algebra
*note-If you score below the required math score, you will have to take a second test that revolves around Arithmetic.
4. What do I need to score on the tests?
To be placed into college level courses, you need the following scores.
English: 77 or higher
Reading: 75 or higher
Elementary Algebra:
a.) 75 or higher for Math for General Education
b.) 98 or higher for College Algebra.
5. What if I’ve already taken the course that is on the test?
These tests are progressive. This means you start from the lowest level and move up into higher level questions. If you’ve successfully completed the zero-level course you were placed in, you do not have to take the course again. You will go on to the next level of course work.
6. What do I do if I didn’t get the score that I wanted?
You have three options that you can do if you want to change your score.
a.) Wait 6 weeks and come back to take the test.
b.) Take the zero level course you are placed into.
c.) Study for a certain number of hours in the ASC on different study software and tutorials.
7. What type of software do you have to help me improve my score?
The ACS has different software that is provided by Advancer Learning that will give you different problems and tutorials. We also have generic software that covers most of the material that will be seen on the placement test.
8. Can I take the test as often as I want?
No. You can only take the College Placement Test three times. You can however, take it a 4th time if you take and successfully complete a zero level course at Rose State College.
9. What are some of the other programs offered?
The Academic Support Center offers programs such as Absent Professor, Campus Conversation and Class Participation opportunities.
