Dr. Ryan Weichelt, Visiting Professor of Geography, will provide a brief overview of his research, “The Electoral Behavior of Hispanics at a National Scale: 1980-2004 and Beyond,” followed by small group discussion at the American Democracy Project’s Coffee with the Times, a series of discussions on timely topics in The New York Times. Weichelt’s talk will analyze previous election results at the county level paying close attention to counties with Hispanic populations greater than 10% of the total population. The results of this research indicate distinct electoral patterns among individual Hispanic groups as well as differences in spatial voting patterns nationally. Important questions for 2008 are what role Hispanics will play in the Presidential and Congressional elections, especially in New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado, and California.
