Academic Department Chair Action Team

Action team formed and charged with reviewing current chair compensation practices and making recommendations about whether and how chair compensation policies should be revised. While the team may reference the previous study (2006-07 Chairs Action Team), it is expected that an updated review of current best practices will be undertaken to help guide a revised recommendation. Faculty Workload Distribution Action Team

Faculty load at UCO is defined in terms of “credit hours” as specified in RUSO policy 3.1.7. An 18 credit hour load is considered fulltime and should be equivalent to a standard 40 hour work week. The 18 credit hours are divided between instructional load (12-13.5 credit hours) and non-instructional load (6-4.5 credit hours). The credit hour is therefore a currency that RUSO uses to track faculty load with each credit hour of assignment being equivalent to 2.333 actual workload hours. This team will look at several factors related to how credit hour loads are currently being assigned to faculty at UCO. Team Facilitators: Ed Cunliff and Bob Brennan

2013-14

Faculty Merit 2.0 Action Team

This action team was established to meet, discuss, and help develop a merit review process using materials faculty submitted to Digital Measures. The goal is to provide an equitable mechanism of identifying and awarding any available merit bonus funds to deserving faculty.                               Facilitators: Evan Lemley and Rudi Nollert

Salary Compression/Inversion Action Team

Salary compression occurs as a result of disparities dealing with faculty having similar salaries yet distinctly differing qualifications. Salary inversion occurs when less experienced faculty members are paid at higher levels than more experienced faculty members. This action team has been asked to develop recommendations as to whether additional policies are necessary to manage these issues at UCO.     Team Facilitators: Ed Cunliff and KJ Tullis

Online Faculty Action Team

There are currently no detailed policies in place to address disparities between faculty teaching online and on campus. This action team was formed to look into the issues concerning aligning online teaching requirements with those who conduct class in the classroom as it relates to faculty personnel and tenure and promotion.    Team Facilitators: April Haulman and Stacy Southerland

General Education Action Team

Current review of practices concerning core curriculum assessment is the charge for this action team. This team will also review UCO’s current general education outcomes to identify any gaps and inconsistencies between these, UCO Central Six tenets, and the three C’s as well as the university’s mission and vision statements.   Team Facilitators: Dawn Holt and Matt Hollrah

Adjunct Faculty Action Team

There is no question of the importance of Adjunct faculty at UCO. ACA implementation has created changes in compensation which have resulted in replacement of some adjunct faculty to full-time lecturers. This action team will work to develop recommendations to determine if current practices related to adjunct faculty are acceptable or changes should be implemented. Honors Action Team

UCO currently has no honors program. Such programs are designed to provide opportunities for exceptional undergraduates who are highly motivated and academically talented. SPIE Action Team

The Student Perception of Instructional Effectiveness (SPIE) is the instrument currently used at UCO to obtain evaluations of faculty and courses by students enrolled those courses. This action team will review the current SPIE process, review current best practices in faculty and course evaluation by students, and develop recommendations for continuing with the current instrument or changing to another instrument. PLA Action Team

Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) is a process for evaluating the knowledge and skills a student gains from life experiences and assigning college credit for those experiences. Copyright Action Team

This action team is charged with reviewing current legal requirements and practices pertaining to copyright issues in higher education. The team will review copyright guidelines at other universities and develop a policy draft that can guide UCO. The team will also make recommendations about the best way to make faculty and staff aware of these issues to ensure that UCO is complying with current laws. Student Complaints Action Team

UCO currently processes a variety of student complaints at all levels. There is a concern that some student complaints that do not manifest themselves into a formal appeal (such as those that might be handled and terminate at the department and college levels, for example) are not collected and stored throughout the university. Because of this, UCO has placed itself in a position of not being able to recognize patterns and trends of complaints by certain student segments or in certain university areas. These would indicate broader problems that could be reviewed and addressed before they develop into less manageable situations. This Action Team will review current mechanisms for managing student complaints throughout the university and recommend new processes for collecting, tracking, and responding to student complaints uniformly across the university. Student Satisfaction Action Team

UCO currently collects student satisfaction data from several sources including the GSS, the NSSE, the SPIE, and a variety of college and department level surveys. This Action Team will review current mechanisms for student input and recommend a new process that will ensure that appropriate and sufficient student satisfaction data is collected, segmented, distributed, and addressed in a timely manner. Emeritus Faculty Action Team

This action team will identify benefits and privileges that are not currently available to emeritus faculty and identify opportunities for the involvement of emeritus faculty at the university, college and department levels. Facilitator: Virginia Peters

Student Workers Processes Action Team

UCO employs student workers across and at nearly all levels of the university. There is a concern that the roles, responsibilities, requirements, and pay structure for these student workers is not uniformly defined and applied throughout the university. This Action Team will review current policies that have been implemented within the university's divisions as they relate to student workers, survey best practices at other universities for managing student workers, and make recommendations for developing a systematic approach to the management of student workers at UCO> Facilitators: Jerel Cowan and Bonnie McNeely

Alternative Scheduling Action Team

Economic pressures and the cost of gasoline have raised this issue again. The concept of alternative scheduling is not, however, new nor just related to economics. Alternatives to the MWF, TTh scheduling format has received attention several times within the last ten years. This team will review and benchmark alternative scheduling at other institutions and recommend models for alternative scheduling at UCO. Facilitators: Jim Machell and Cindy Boling

Interdisciplinary Studies Action Team

In support of the Academic Long-Term goal to support learning collaborations on campus, there is a need to facilitate the implementation and operation of interdisciplinary programs, majors and related activities. This action team should review best practices and identify current road blocks, help define the terminology, and make recommendations regarding creation of and management of interdisciplinary programs and majors. Chairs Action Team

The Chairs' roles and responsibilities have continued to evolve at UCO as the institution has changed and evolved. This team is asked to proactively consider the roles and responsibilities of the Chairs and to provide a model that will help Chairs work productively within the framework of their college and the institution as a whole. GA/TA/RA/LA Action Team

The selection, utilization and management of graduate student assistantships (including GA's, RA's, LA's and TA's) at UCO must be handled more systematically. Issues in this regard include (but are not limited to): qualifications, the appointment process, budgetary issues, stipend disbursement issues, time-keeping accountability issues, monitoring of work issues, tuition waiver issues, standardization and centralization issues, as well as the roles of the graduate college, the academic colleges, and the academic departments. Study Tours Action Team

UCO study tours are intended to accomplish learning objectives and provide educational experience in the context of travel away from the University. A number of issues associated with study tours should be formalized: Legal issues, student conduct issues, academic and learning outcomes (What should students achieve, what changes will the experience make in their lives, will they become more sophisticated regarding cultures other than their own? Derrick Bok, for one, expresses concern that such experiences rarely venture outside the narrow comfort zones of faculty and students.). Database Integrity Action Team

Ensure that the data that impacts the academic support of students and the academic missions of the colleges is accurate and represents the information needed by UCO faculty and staff. This data is primarily located within Banner but may be found elsewhere. Data must be "owned" by responsible database managers ensuring its validity and meeting the needs of those using the data for academic support, such as advising students, scheduling classes, preparing curricula, and for the continuous improvement of academic programs.
